Walking around at night wasn’t safe. Everyone knew that. That was the time when the vampires took over the world and humans became nothing more than prey. Caleb wouldn’t have been out if he had any other choice, but with his little sister missing he couldn’t just sit at home hoping she’d walk through the door. His parents had tried to talk him out of going, because they didn’t want to lose him too, and a part of him felt guilty for leaving even when he knew how afraid they were that he’d be kidnapped by vampires. It seemed likely that was what had happened to his sister, as she made her way home from a party she shouldn’t have been at.

Sitting in the coffee shop, they sipped their hot drinks, even though they couldn’t taste them, and readied themselves to tell the other the name they’d chosen. At least that was what the vampire who’d chosen the name Midna was doing. She had no idea if her sister was procrastinating because she hadn’t yet picked a name or if she was just drawing out the tension. They smiled at each other and that was when Midna knew. She tapped her fingers on the table impatiently, half wishing she’d ordered something to eat. For the first time in months she felt hungry for human food.

On the night Magda made the decision that she was going to visit the donor house she’d been alive for over two millennia. The netbook sitting in front of her still showed the about page and she stared at it. Vampires were interesting creatures, always trying new ways to survive, but this was something she’d never seen before. For the first time she approved of what the creators of the donor house were trying to do, bringing immortal and mortal together in an attempt to get them each to understand the other. It reminded her of what the only man she had ever loved had tried to do.

On the other side of the road were three girls, all wearing the colour that had become known as the sign of the donor house. Leon shook his head, unable to believe that so many people would seriously put their lives on hold in order to help vampires, and bumped into someone at almost the same time. He looked up, planning on apologising, until he saw the white collar she was wearing around her neck, which turned his apology into a groan. Pushing aside his distaste of what she did he summoned an apologetic smile.

In the short time Jack had been at the donor house he’d come to realise that the whole system they set up had changed things for all vampires. When he chose a donor he didn’t have to worry that they’d want more from him than he could give, because they were friends first and their vampire-donor relationship came second. As he sat on Georgina’s bed, just after feeding from her, the two of them smiled at each other. She didn’t want him to turn her into a vampire, like some he’d fed from before he found the donor house, or expect him to sleep with her, as she wasn’t attracted to him in any way.

Lewis had asked Dawn to meet one vampire from the donor house. As he’d helped her once again, giving her a flat to live in until she decided what she was going to do next, she felt she couldn’t say no to the request. Since sunset she’d been pacing around her living room, wondering who would be knocking on her door. Every time she heard the slightest noise she straightened the cushions again, making certain that the room was as tidy as it could be, only to find that the noise had been nothing important. Wrapping her arms around herself she tried not to let her fear get the better of her. It was hard to believe that the donor house would be inhabited by vampires like the ones she’d left behind.

Nick stood beside Sarah as she took the time to stare at the building that was going to become her home. Even though she knew Elise was right, the house was where she’d be safest, she wished there had been another option. Out of the corner of her eye she could see the vampire who’d offered to accompany her during the journey, to keep her safe from the insane vampire who’d decided she was going to be his companion, and, although she was grateful for his help, she couldn’t stop herself from feeling uncomfortable around him. Both Elise and Nick had told her there were different types of vampires, but Sarah had only met Nick a couple of times before and she couldn’t help thinking that maybe Elise had been brainwashed at the house.

Lewis was still in the doorway of the dining room when Elise realised he was looking for her. She glanced at Tom and Lily, who both shrugged, before nibbling on the cold toast that was still on the plate in front of her. It wasn’t hard to guess why the vampire was looking for her, not with Sarah arriving in a couple of days, and Elise could understand why there were questions. Becoming a long termer would have been easy enough to do in theory, if money had been the only reason Sarah wanted to enter the house, but there was more to the decision than how much money she would get for becoming a long term donor.

They’d know exactly how Sullivan was going to react to finding her on the floor. Except for the fire. It had meant Darian needed to move fast, otherwise they’d both end up dead, and he didn’t want to be dead. He’d only taken the job because he was the youngest child, so he needed to prove himself to his creator. There was just one problem. Seeing Sullivan’s face, the utter devastation that he’d been unable to hide when he saw her, he didn’t know if he wanted to go back to his creator with the girl. As he’d never met Sullivan he hadn’t expected to be bothered by his feelings, but he was, which was why he was standing in the garden of the burning house, staring down at the girl, and thinking about what he should do.

Sullivan had no other options. As the train pulled into the station he pulled his coat tighter around him, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him, and prepared himself for what was to come as best he could. Until… her, he couldn’t even think the name, he’d been happy being a vampire, and and believed himself emotionless, but then she’d come along. Stepping down onto the platform he pushed his memories as far back as they would go. Thinking about it all hurt too much. Running a tongue over his dry lips he did his best to avoid looking at any human, so his hunger wouldn’t get the better of him, during the long journey to the donor house. If he hadn’t been close to the point where he would have no control it probably would have been nowhere near as long, but then he also wouldn’t have been there.

Alice looked at John and ran a hand though her hair, showing that she was nervous. “We talked after you left last night and it was a joint decision, which is unusual.” She smiled. “We all think you’ve been a wonderful addition to the house, so we’d like to offer you the chance to move in, because we know that you don’t currently have a permanent place of residence.”
