I'm rebelling this year, and just writing stories for the Many Worlds. This is me, if you want to add me as a buddy.
k_a_webb: (Default)
I'm slowly getting back into things. Still got some stuff to deal with, but that's going to happen as it happens. However I have set up an Imzy community for the Many Worlds, so it would be great to see you there, and if anyone has questions I could start posting with that would really help.
k_a_webb: (Default)
At the moment I still have no orders, and my last clearing day is the 29th of this month. If I was to get a couple of orders by Saturday there is a chance I'd be okay financially, but, as I haven't heard from anyone in the last few days, I'm not certain how likely that is. Therefore I'm turning to my online community for help. Right now, although I know James can help, I'm in one of the most difficult positions I've been in, especially as my back-up fund has now been entirely drained.

My target is £300. This is entirely going to go towards the rent. I'm offering one new story for £10, which will be at least 3000 words, or any donation to go towards the completion of one of my unfinished stories. For those of you who don't know much about my worlds I'm going to post the most basic information in a cut below, which will also include world/collections I haven't started writing for.

Every little really will help me out at the moment. Having no back-up fund is the hardest part of all this. For every £50 I earn I'll write something new for the website, which might be a story, a meta-conversation, or something else.

I have some flavoured instant coffees and herbal teas I'm never going to touch again, so I was hoping someone here might be interested in them.

The flavoured coffees are Beanies Mint Chocolate; Double Chocolate; Cinder Toffee; and Irish Cream. Each one has a teaspoon of coffee taken from them, so I could try them, and found I didn't enjoy them. As the seal is broken I'll use something to make sure the coffee doesn't go everywhere. I'm selling them for postage costs, which looks to be around £2.80, in the UK. Outside the UK it will be more expensive.

The herbal teas are Twinings Peppermint; Nettle; Raspberry Leaf; and two Peppermint and Nettle. All but one of the boxes of Peppermint and Nettle have one bag taken from them. Again I'm selling for postage costs, which should be about the same as the coffee, unless you're outside the UK, and I'll make certain they're securely packaged.

If you have no interest in any of the above donations are always gratefully received and will result in more writing.

I went to look at the office today and after a long conversation with James I've decided I'm going to rent it, at least for a few months, because I need somewhere I can call work space. The office has a lock, so I'll be able to take some of my stuff over and leave it there without worrying. I can use the University as my work address. James will be able to play his games without worrying too much about bothering me and I'll be able to work in a place purely for work. From the look of my finances currently I'm probablt going to have to walk there and back, as it will take me to what I'm certain I will be earning each month, but that's not a problem. It's only half an hour.

Of course that's what I'm earning each month from the ghostwriting. I'm hoping to add my Patreon and Monthly Membership income to that, if I have any, and that's a little more passive. Once I have some other ebooks up that's more passive income. Having the office, I think, will make it easier for me to work on the ghostwriting, which will then give me more time to work on my work when I'm here, in order to increase said passive income. So, yeah, if anyone would like to help me with that I'd really appreciate some signal boosting - especially of the Monthly Membership. In the next couple of days I'm planning on going through the stories I have completed, to post them up, before working on some of the things I really want to get finished.

Being me I'm also starting a couple of new things - but I don't think that's ever going to change. I am who I am. I'm planning on having one of them finished today and the other at some point relatively soon.

(I don't think my brain's every going to accept it's 2015 and not 2014.)

June is going to be the month when I get back to writing original fiction. This is important to me, because I think it's part of the reason I've been feeling so adrift at the moment, although I know it's not the whole reason. Even though Trevor died in March I'm still coming to terms with that. For those of you who don't know Trevor's my father and we had a difficult relationship. His death was unexpected, even though he was ill, so it's still something I'm learning to accept. I won't get any random texts, or annoying emails, or hear from him again at all. I'm not going to get into that too much, as it's not the reason I started this post - although it does connect. No one knows when their death might come and there's still so much I want to write. Even though I should still have 20 or more years to go there are no guarantees, but I'm one of those people who doesn't view spending an hour playing a video game as wasting time if that's what you want to be doing. Enjoying life, to me, is one of the most important things, and I enjoy writing more than anything else, which is why I want to be writing more.

One of the certainties I have is that I'm a very fast writer. I can write 10,000 words in four hours, as long as I'm writing a story I connect with. Even if I don't the base is around 8,000 words in four hours, because my lowest limit is 2000 words an hour, if I'm focusing on writing rather than anything else. My top is 12,000 words in four hours. Due to this I should be able to do the things I want to be doing - the problem is the distractions of life. There's doggy day care. There's James. There's having to look after the house. There's spending time with my family. All of this adds together to make it far too easy for me to lose focus on what I want to be doing around the ghostwriting. It's the reason I'm thinking an office would be good for me. It will be somewhere purely for work and nothing else.

The rest of this is going behind a cut, as I have spoken about all this before, so I don't want to bore anyone.

For some reason I have absolutely no concentration span whatsoever. It's annoying. I'm flitting between working and not doing anything useful, so I thought my uselessness could become a blog post, especially as I've been working things out in my head I probably should write down somewhere.

There is a chance I might be renting a desk/office. At the Bognor Campus of Chi Uni they have a system set up for that, so I'm going to be having a lot on the 4th of June, because working from home is not working as well as I need it to. James, and the dogs, and everything, are incredibly distracting, so being able to go somewhere a couple of days a week would be very helpful. Plus, if I'm out on days when James is day sleeping, there is less of this expectation I'm going to be here when he wants to be getting up, which means he's going to have to sort himself out. Of course this is going to lead to whining and complaints for a while, but being the main earner means I need to be able to focus on what I'm working on and that means he can lump it. As much as I love him I need to think of myself sometimes. I'm not very good at it, but this is a step in the right direction. Having a place purely for work is going to change things for me.

I'm still waiting on Patreon to get back to me. This is irritating, but not a surprise. I want to know what the problem is and if they can fix if. If they can't I need to be thinking about what else I can do to crowdfund. (Once again I'm damning the people who came with EU VAT - mostly because they thought a law created in 2008 or whenever it was would work in 2015. Head, meet desk.) However this does mean I have been thinking of ideas for the Monthly Membership. For the collections that have the most characters/worlds/stories I'm going to be splitting them up. So, for example, I'm going to be splitting the Donor House into characters. This will be in timeline order, so I'll have all the stories from Alice's POV, and Nick, and Lewis, and whoever else I've written more than one story for. For Aurora's World I think it's going to be by kingdom, at least to begin with, and then I'll go from there. For the Brotherhood it will be by House. By doing this I can see what I have and what I don't have, which is important.

Then I need to make a decision about the novellas. Do I put them separate to the Monthly Membership and a part of it as well? I think I will. Separating them means buyers can purchase something as a one off and then make a decision as to whether they want to be a part of the Monthly Membership. It's not much more work, either. Putting them up as two things is relatively simple on Gumroad, which is why the Collection Ebooks are up separately.

Now that I've mentioned the Collection Ebooks I need to go into more detail about what I'm doing about them. They have been changed from the Collection One Ebooks to the Collection Ebooks for a reason. Instead of creating something new every time I update the ebooks I'm just going to update them there. This means you won't be buying the same stories more than once. You'll simply be able to download the new version and see what I've updated. I might have a page at the front talking about what I've done, to make it easier for readers. Obviously I will always have the tipjars up at the website, so if you do want to toss some pennies in after you've downloaded the new versions I won't complain, but I also don't mind at all if you don't. Doing this is all about making things the best value I can.

I've also got some new shortcodes at the website, for my series plug-in, that are going to make life much easier for me - because it means I don't have to post links for all the stories I write. I can just add a shortcode and like magic there's the whole list. I'm very happy with this. The easier I can make my life the better everything is. Now all I need to do is update the Donor House, Fae World, and World Walkers collections there, and then the website is tidy. I like tidy. Once I have tidy I can hopefully go back to working on stories. Writing is the most important thing in the world to me - but then I have an income to earn. If they both meshed the way I want them to life would be a lot easier.

Oh, and I can hardly let a post go by without asking for some signal boosting help. Any signal boost is great. A short one, a long one, one included in a load of other things... every boost is a chance of earning a little more income. More income means less stressed writer. Less stressed writer, I hope, means less flitting about, because it's driving me mental. What I want boosted, for the foreseeable future, is my Monthly Membership and the Collection Ebooks, or for simpleness send them to my profile. I know it's annoying having to create a new logon, but I'm not going to be leaving Gumroad any time soon (as far as I can tell, anyway, because the EU doesn't think short term - it only thinks long term).
k_a_webb: (Default)
My Patreon is down for the foreseeable future because nothing I post as Patrons Only is staying Patrons Only. I have contacted them, so we shall see how things go.

All twelve collection ebooks are available for £7.50, or £5 a month if you're interested in being a part of the Monthly Membership, and I'd really appreciate some signal boosting on that. If I can get ten sales before the end of this month I will be very happy and it will buy me some time to work on the things I want to be working on. Like the novellas I started. Before I realised my Patreon was having issues I posted them up, which meant rereading them, and they were better than I thought. If I can get those complete in the next couple of weeks I will be pleased and it is now possible as I'm mostly caught up. I just have one series of orders to do and then I'm back to normal. That makes me happy. Patreon issues makes me annoyed.

Now I need to go do things. If you want to boost a particular collection feel free to head to the website and pick out a favourite story to add to it.

I've updated both items at Gumroad, so now all of the Collection Ebooks are available.

With 2015 being two weeks away… I really can’t believe how little of 2014 is left and how much I was one looking forward to the new year. Last month that changed. Last month I heard about the new VAT legislation, which changed everything. The fight is still ongoing, so I’m not giving up hope that we will get the threshold we so desperately need for thousands of businesses to be able to survive, but I also have to plan for the worst case scenario. What happens if we don’t get a threshold?

I will no longer be selling ebooks from my site. I don’t have the time to deal with VATMOSS, so I’m going to give that one a miss for now, although I might not be able to if they roll this out to physical goods. That’s something I’m trying not to think too much about. For now my focus is on helping the hundreds, maybe even thousands, of people who are doing everything they can to stop this mess from destroying the digital economy, because that is what this terrible law is going to do – if we can’t stop it. My hope is that we will. At the moment I can’t be certain of that, however, and that is why I’m writing this post. That’s why I’m thinking about what I will be doing next year in order to try to start earning some passive income.

The first thing I’m doing is waiting for Etsy to give me some idea if they’re going to be helping their sellers with this mess. We haven’t heard anything from them yet, but again I’m still hoping. I’ve been doing a lot of that recently. If they will be my ebooks will be sold there. That might mean them taking a cut of my earnings and right now that’s something I care about less than I ever had before. All the pennies really do count to me, especially as we are aware of certain things that might mean we have less income in the new year, but that’s something I won’t talk too much about in public – at the moment though I am just about managing to keep us both going, which is slowly getting harder. Fortunately I’m a stubborn person and I’m not going to stop. Even if they aren’t willing to help with the VAT issue I will be keeping my custom work up there, as they have a much bigger market share than I do. Please check it out. If I can make £200 a month there it’s less ghostwriting I need to take on in order to earn the same amount of income.

If Etsy aren’t willing to help then I have three options. One of those is Amazon. Now, I like Amazon as a buyer. It’s a good place to go for the things I want at a good price. However I’m not too happy with the idea of giving them more income when they are one of the reasons this law exists in the first place. So I don’t think that’s the one I’m going to pick. The second is going with someone who’ll deal with the VAT for me. Now this is an option I’m happier about, but the issue I have with this one is that I’ll lose UK income as they’ll charge VAT on all sales. This isn’t a huge problem and that means it is something I’m thinking about. My third option, the one I think is least likely to work and I most want to do, is to put all of my ebooks up for free here, while leaving the tip jars up in the hope that my readers like my work enough to want to drop some pennies in it – because it’s that income that will give me the time I need to be able to work on more. There will be no suggested tip value – whatever you wish to give me is always appreciated. I write because I love it, but the thing I also have to remember is that I do need to make some money doing this.

For now I’m still thinking. I’m still hoping that the work everyone is doing will mean I don’t have to do any of those things. So I thank them once again for the hard work they’ve done. You are all amazing.

After much thought I’ve decided it’s for the best if I put the website on hiatus until the beginning of next year. When I made my plans for December I had no idea my wrist was going to be this bad and it’s making everything difficult. I need to focus on catching up with my paid-for orders and also, hopefully, get the chance to take some time working with the software I got, so that I’m writing more than 500 words in an hour.

I’m also working on some plans for next year. In order for me to keep the website I need to work out how I’m going to make some income from it, which is going to be harder than it was due to new legislation that affects how I charge VAT, which was something I wouldn’t have needed to do, so I have a few plans I’m going to be working on.

The Advent Story I’ll finish up in January. It’s really disappointing to have to stop, but that along with everything else is just too much at the moment.

My current workload being what it is Friday Case updates will be, for the foreseeable future, donation only. Toss $5 in the tip jar and get a Friday update, even if it’s on the Friday. Toss $10 in the tip jar and get a Wednesday update as well.

I’m also working on some plans for the novellas, because I want them to be a reality but I need to find a way to shove them into my very full schedule and make it worth the work.

This year the raffle will be running bimonthly – this one will end on the 31st of August and the next will be in October. My aim this month is for five entrants and if I reach this number I’ll give away a rental or adoption for free; at ten I’ll give away two rentals or adoptions; and if I reach as many as twenty then I’ll give away four free rentals or adoptions.

I never did announce the winner of the April raffle, so I’ll announce that at the same time as I announce the winner of June’s raffle. Unfortunately I’m not entirely certain when this will be, as I’ve become very busy with ghostwriting, but I’ll try to get to it as soon as possible.

Enter this raffle in one of three ways: comment on any piece of fiction, no matter when it was published, and honestly going back to stories that were posted years ago is a good thing because it makes me go back to them; link to any story, no matter when they were published (this includes Twitter retweets, Facebook shares, and reblogging on Tumblr); or use credits – 2 credits = 1 entry. There no limit on the number of times any one person can enter, so feel free to enter as many times as you like.

The base prize is 5000 words. For every comment I’ll add 100 words; for every link I’ll add 250 words, and if they happen to be Twitter retweets, Facebook shares, or reblogs on Tumblr, I’ll add another 50 words, because I’d love some more of them (although I have a feeling I might be missing them, so you’ll have to let me know if you do this, let me know in the comments for the raffle); and for every entry purchased with credits I’ll add 500 words.

In order to make things much simpler for me I've set up my Dreamwidth account, which has been renamed k_a_webb, to be the place where all of my writing is mirrored, rather than having a separate writing account. Although I will still be crossposting to my personal account at Livejournal I'm thinking about not having my writing there, as I've had a lot of issues with the client I use. Often it takes three or four attempts for me to actually be able to post something there, so it would take much less time if I just used Dreamwidth, and I have made sure to import everything here, including comments. Hopefully this wouldn't cause too many problems, as I know a lot of people do use both, although I do suggest reading at the website because it's just easier for most of the collections. I do still have to sort the Donor House, the World Walkers, and the Fae World, but I should, hopefully, be able to sort them out this month. That does depend on time and other issues though.

For the last couple of days I've been thinking about novellas, and income, and all of the things I don't seem to stop thinking about. If anyone has any ideas for collection based novellas I'd love to hear them, because I think it would be a good starting point for them, although I'm still planning on working on the others first. To be honest I think I just want more things available to purchase, instead of people buying words, as I've never really had as much interest in that as I need to be able to make a living just be crowdfunding, sadly, and my favourite things - the adoptions, the rentals, and the bundles - have never really been something that very many people are interested in. Maybe that will change now that I have my writing and my personal account together. Who knows?
k_a_webb: (Default)
Even though I would keep writing even if I wasn't earning any money I really do like being able to write and earn money, especially as the client I'm currently working for really likes what I'm doing. I'm still not going to let myself get too over-excited about it all, just in case something does happen, because it's always possible, so what I am going to do is remind you of my current offer. For $5/£3/€4 I will write you 1000 words of fiction, which can be for one of my collections or it can be something of your own that you simply don't have the time/the inclination/the ability to write. My Paypal email is k_a_webb{at}live{dot}co{dot}uk or you can send an email to the same address, let me know what you want and what currency you want to pay in, and I'll send you an invoice. I am, as always, open to payment in installments, so if you wanted, for example, to buy 15,000 words over three months you can. This includes bundles of stories, so if you want more than one Brotherhood story then I can do that for you, and these bundles, with your permission, would then be sold at my website.

I am doing well, at the moment, but the issue with Fiverr is that it does take 14 days for the funds to clear and they take $1 per every $5 that I make, so I would earn more if someone was interested in this offer. Plus it would be nice to do writing for my own collections and get some income for it.
