One of them had to stay at the House in case of emergencies and it was Alice’s turn. She didn’t mind, as it gave her a chance to start sorting out the decorations, but that was until she saw the tree. At first all she could do was stare at it, unable to believe that they’d really chosen to purchase what appeared to be a 10 foot tall Christmas Tree. Unfortunately it would fit where they’d planned to put it, because the reception had lovely high ceilings, so there was really no reason to tell them to return it and get something less ostentatious. They had, thankfully, bought a tree with roots, as John had asked, which would be planted somewhere after all the festivities were done. It made the amount of money they must have paid for it a long term investment rather than a waste.

Walking around at night wasn’t safe. Everyone knew that. That was the time when the vampires took over the world and humans became nothing more than prey. Caleb wouldn’t have been out if he had any other choice, but with his little sister missing he couldn’t just sit at home hoping she’d walk through the door. His parents had tried to talk him out of going, because they didn’t want to lose him too, and a part of him felt guilty for leaving even when he knew how afraid they were that he’d be kidnapped by vampires. When John walked into the room that the vampires often used for a meeting room he found Alice and Nick in there, arguing again. Their problems had been getting worse ever since Caleb had arrived at the house. Nick was jealous of her spending so much time with the human addict and didn’t know how to tell Alice that he was jealous, so he picked arguments with her because it was easier than trying to find the right words to explain his feelings. All John could do was stand there and watch them, even though he wanted to step in to tell them that they were both being stupid. Finally Nick stormed out of the room without glancing at John.
