The Many Ramblings of K. A. Webb

Blake looked around the room. There were twelve other people, all of whom were sat silently with their eyes locked on the door. Every one of them had been in there for longer than him and they were all patiently waiting for something to happen. It was the only thing they could do because the room was windowless, so the smell of sweating bodies was beginning to get overwhelming, and the door was guarded by two vampires. One of the two would enter the room if there was any noise at all, which was never good. The girl who had entered the room with Blake hadn’t wanted to be quiet. She had been taken away by one of the guards and hadn’t returned. Blake thought she was probably dead so, even though he wasn’t exactly happy about being some vampire’s blood slave, he kept quiet like everyone else.

One of them had to stay at the House in case of emergencies and it was Alice’s turn. She didn’t mind, as it gave her a chance to start sorting out the decorations, but that was until she saw the tree. At first all she could do was stare at it, unable to believe that they’d really chosen to purchase what appeared to be a 10 foot tall Christmas Tree. Unfortunately it would fit where they’d planned to put it, because the reception had lovely high ceilings, so there was really no reason to tell them to return it and get something less ostentatious. They had, thankfully, bought a tree with roots, as John had asked, which would be planted somewhere after all the festivities were done. It made the amount of money they must have paid for it a long term investment rather than a waste.

For most vampires there was a slightly sexual element to feeding. Jack knew that, but feeding had never been like that to him, even before he had a name for what he was. That knowledge was one of the reason he was grateful he’d been turned into a vampire. If he’d just lived his human life then he would have died without that and back then his life had been very difficult. His family expected him to marry and have children just like everyone else. They didn’t get it when he tried to explain to them that he didn’t want to have children. In all honesty he didn’t want to get married either because he didn’t think that anyone would understand why he didn’t have any interest in sex.
