It was disappointing, but not a surprise. Kerry had sent off her application on a whim, thinking the Donor House would be the best place to find her saviour, and she was right about that. Both Nick and Alice had agreed that if she was looking for a specific vampire then the House was where she was most likely to find him. The problem was she didn’t know him. All she had was a memory of his voice from the night he stopped her from being taken by the gatherers, which meant that no one could help her. Even a name would have been a start, because it wasn’t unusual for wandering vampires to meet hundreds of their kind, but she didn’t even have that.

In the short time Jack had been at the donor house he’d come to realise that the whole system they set up had changed things for all vampires. When he chose a donor he didn’t have to worry that they’d want more from him than he could give, because they were friends first and their vampire-donor relationship came second. As he sat on Georgina’s bed, just after feeding from her, the two of them smiled at each other. She didn’t want him to turn her into a vampire, like some he’d fed from before he found the donor house, or expect him to sleep with her, as she wasn’t attracted to him in any way.
