Memories of the night before battered Sam from the moment he woke up. The face of the vampire who had left him for dead; his deceased friends and teammates; Alice with tears in her eyes; and the voice, at times his father’s, at others his mother’s, that kept telling him he was making a huge mistake by becoming a blood sucker. It wouldn’t matter to either of them that he hadn’t been ready to die. He knew that he’d never see then again because of the choice he’d made and a small part of him regretted hurting them. Until the night he’d met Alice his beliefs had been the same as his parents. All vampires were evil. Getting to know Alice had taught him how wrong he was.

Kneeling beside a very battered Sam, Alice did her best to keep the tears from falling. Being a hunter could be dangerous, but most never came across a vampire who actually wanted to hurt them. Most vampires saw the human hunters as a joke, because even a group of humans would have trouble hurting a vampire who was feeding regularly, although there were those who used the hunters as a way out of a life they’d never wanted. She looked over at the other hunters, all of whom were dead, and felt a wave of pity wash over her, as they were all hunters who had followed Sam when he said he was going to change his way of thinking. It was thanks to them that so many vampire in need of help had found the donor house.
