It shouldn’t have come as a surprise, but it did. Finula managed to get through the handfasting and the party afterwards easily enough. There was so much going on that she did have to spend much time with the man her father had chosen for her, although he did always seem to be by her side. She wasn’t entirely certain how he’d managed it, or that she appreciated it, but it did tell her what sort of husband he was going to be. Her sisters had told her that was what would happen – if it hadn’t been for their support she wasn’t sure she would have been able to deal with everything and she still had the hardest part to go.

Slowly, wondering why he could feel the sun on his face when he was certain that he’d fallen asleep with the curtains closed, Luke opened his eyes. At first he thought he must be dreaming. That was really the only logical explanation. He didn’t know any other reason he’d be lying on the ground at the very edge of a forest. Of course the only problem with that idea was the fact he’d woken up. In none of the dreams he could remember having had he woken up. Dreaming seemed to be less of a transition than waking did, so then he began thinking what the other possibilities were.

If we hadn’t wanted the humans to know what had happened they wouldn’t. It really is as simple as that. Those who truly understand us know that it’s true, but those who don’t… well, they still want to believe that they have some control over the world they live on, and won’t accept that it faded away with the arrival of the griffins. When the griffins came they brought magic with them, or caused it to blossom in this world as it hadn’t before, which changed us as well, although that isn’t something any of us are going to complain about. Not the way the humans do, anyway, because there are so many of them who aren’t at all happy with what’s happened, and don’t seem to be able to come to terms with the fact that everything has already happened. Even if they’d known what was coming there was no chance of them being able to stop it from happening in the first place, as they never would have been able to stop the griffins from travelling here.

It was disappointing, but not a surprise. Kerry had sent off her application on a whim, thinking the Donor House would be the best place to find her saviour, and she was right about that. Both Nick and Alice had agreed that if she was looking for a specific vampire then the House was where she was most likely to find him. The problem was she didn’t know him. All she had was a memory of his voice from the night he stopped her from being taken by the gatherers, which meant that no one could help her. Even a name would have been a start, because it wasn’t unusual for wandering vampires to meet hundreds of their kind, but she didn’t even have that.

This entry is part 1 of 18 in the Pagan collection

Every month, on the first, Megan lit a candle. It was something she did to send strength to her youngest sister, who was still trapped in a situation that she wouldn’t be able to free herself from until her sixteenth birthday, the same way both her elder sisters had done. When the candle was burning Megan found herself thinking back to the day she’d left the ‘family home’ behind for good and the days that followed it. She’d been planning on leaving from the time she realised what it meant, because she wanted it to be her choice, but the way he’d looked at her had made her wonder what he really was thinking. Thinking about it made her shiver, so she did her best not to, as it had never happened – she had packed up everything that was important to her, said goodbye to her sisters, and walked out without a backward glance.

“It is important to remember where we came from, little ones,” Old Max started, looking around at the group of Nox and Felis that surrounded him. Jarek sat at the back, in the shadows, feeling more comfortable there because he really was too old to keep going to the Long Night storytelling, but he wanted to keep reminding himself of home and Old Max could conjure the memories better than Jarek. “You are all lucky, because you have never known the fear of our home worlds, but those who were brought here by the magic of the door will never forget. They could tell you stories themselves of what they lived through if it wasn’t too hard for them to remember the life they once led. When we were there we never believed that we would ever be free of the hunters. Nox Gadael were hunted for their magic, horns stolen so they could have our magic, while the Alati Felis were being systematically exterminated, due to a story that was once told of the deadly Felis beast.

Daedalus had always been skilled at finding things. Even though all his friends were aardvarks too, then, they turned to him if they needed something found, whether it was a younger sibling or something of value. So, when he realised he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life, he came to the conclusion it was time to use his ability to earn a living, which did mean listening to several lectures from his mother, who believed he could do so much more with his life. The one thing she never seemed to understand was that he didn’t want to do so much more – he wanted to be happy and that was really all that mattered.
