Part 9, 97th continuation

Kaito nodded. “I feel exactly the same way. That job isn’t one I’d wish on any one, especially not now, if the worlds are right and change is coming. Kester is good at it, though, from what I’ve heard, so I trust him to do the right thing at the right time, with the help of the people I’ve heard he relies on. Fortunately he knows he can’t do it alone and gets the help he needs.”

“You know a lot about Kester. More than me from the sounds of things.”

“When you travel the worlds alone, for whatever reason, you get to know people and these people often know things that you don’t. The trade in information is still strong between the natural and the Council Moonjumpers, although there are less of us journeying the Web in the way that they do. We just happen to know certain things about the worlds that they don’t, as we were lucky enough to learn from the Council and I read Leolin’s journals as well, so several people were happy enough to share what they knew about Kester in return for what I knew about certain worlds.”

“So if I were to do the same thing?”

“As far as I know you have more information than me to sell because you’re a true Moonjumper.” Kaito bit his lip. “I’m not a Moonjumper. When I travelled to Kniroch I found that out for certain, because I had a very interesting chat with someone who knows better than anyone who is meant to walk the worlds and who isn’t. I’m one of the people who isn’t, yet got the chance because of the choices that the fae made. You, as far as I know, is someone who’s meant to walk the worlds, and I have a feeling you’ve done it in previous lives, although I couldn’t tell you why I think that.”

“Personally I do believe all true Moonjumpers lived previous lives, otherwise we wouldn’t have been chosen by the worlds. Some things Quiar’s said to me makes me think I wasn’t always the best person, but that I’ve learnt through my lives, and it’s this life I was preparing for, because of the position that I’ve found myself in.” Lucille sighed. “She keeps asking me if I’m certain that I want to learn about who I was before and I am certain, even though I know that I’m probably not going to be happy with some of the choices I made. I just know that I was once a young soul, therefore I had to make mistakes in order to learn as I aged, and those are mistakes I do believe I need to remember, before the Web does change.”

“Merry’s been asking me if I wanted to learn about my past lives. Even though I wasn’t meant to be a Moonjumper in this life and still found my way into the job I did live other lives as a Moonjumper, according for my acquaintance in Kniroch. He could see the miles that I’d travelled, the miles I still had to travel, and told me that this life I was meant to be settled, but I wasn’t settled on the right world. That’s why I ended up here. Quiar is meant to be my home. I just didn’t know it until I got here.”

“What about Carver?”

“Carver’s the same as you. He was meant to walk the worlds, although at the moment it is right that he stays where he is” Kaito rubbed his ear. “Azure… he wasn’t willing to talk about her. I had no idea how he knew as much as he did, but I have a feeling he’s one of those people with a magic that no one else knows exists. When I told him I was once a Council Moonjumper he gave me this look, it made me feel like he was staring into my soul, and eventually he nodded. He told me that I wasn’t truly a Council Moonjumper – it was just a means to an end, because I knew I wasn’t in the right place.” He shrugged. “He wouldn’t tell me what the right place was, but that I had to find it myself and I’d know it for certain when I did find it.”
“Did you know when you stepped onto Quiar that this was where you were meant to be?”

“I didn’t, not straight away, but then I took a bit of time to get to know the place, because it wasn’t a world I’d learnt about, and when I did I knew. Quiar was my home, only I wasn’t born here. Maybe I lived her in previous lives, so my soul knew it, but if that is the case I can’t understand why I didn’t make the choice to be born on Quiar.”

“There’s a reason for everything, Kai. You just have to work out what they are and I don’t doubt that it had something to do with what you needed to learn during this life.” Lucille smiled. “If you were born here you never would have met me, or Carver, or Azure, and I do think you were meant to, because otherwise it wouldn’t have happened.”

“You’re right, and I wouldn’t have met that man on Kniroch.” Kaito shrugged. “I just can’t help thinking things would have been much easier if I was simply born here, but I really do have to remember that nothing is simple here, thanks to the magic that made the Web.”

“Life is never simple, even if you’re born on a world without magic, because you live in order to learn and if you didn’t go through hardships you wouldn’t.”

“What would you know of worlds without magic?” Kaito asked, sounding amused.

“Quiar tells me stories of what Earth was like before the fae arrived and what some of them are like now.” Lucille smiled. “She likes to talk, when she has the chance to, because it helps to take her mind off things. It’s easier for her to talk about Earth than it is for her to tell me stories about the Web, as talking about the Web doesn’t really work as a distraction, unfortunately, although she will tell me if I ask.”

“There are times when I feel jealous of you, Lucy, because you can talk to the worlds, but then I realise what it means again and I change my mind. I don’t want to be in the position that you are.”

“Open your mind. If the worlds are willing to talk to you they will, whether you’re a Moonjumper or not, so just let them come to you. Quiar loves being able to talk to people, as does Athare, and Kniroch, and Beshaki. They’re three worlds that don’t find it easy to chose Moonjumpers, don’t find it easy to talk to anyone on their worlds, and having someone like you around always helps them. Raenarin, from what I’ve heard, is the same. Every one of them needs the support of others, because they go through such difficult times.”

“I might just do that.” Kaito smiled, but quickly sobered. “Now, these charms you wanted – it’s not going to be a simple job, so I am going to have to charge you.”

Lucille stared at him for a moment, unable to believe he’d said something quite so stupid. “I was fully expecting you to charge me, Kai. I didn’t ask you because I wanted them for free. I asked you because I wanted the best to make them and I’m willing to pay the best.” She shook her head. “How much are you going to need?”

“Well, if it was just you it would be less, as I know you, but as you want one for Peric and Bertram as well… honestly, Lucy, I’m going to have to think about it for a couple of days, work out who I should change you into, and then go from there.”

“That’s fine. You know where I am, so send me a message when you work it out.” Lucille smiled. “Thank you. I did wonder if you’d take the job, considering what it means, and I’m glad you have, because it means I’ll know we’re safe from someone finding out that we aren’t meant to be there.”

“Of course you will. It’ll be my best work, Lucille, because I am going to keep you safe from the Fasachis. Will you need any other charms to take with you.”

“Probably.” Lucille bit her lip. “Let me think about it and I’ll get back to you, because we’ve got some time before it happens. So far we only know there is a link, not that we will definitely be going there, but I do think it’s very likely. Being prepared is something the Council taught me and travelling the worlds has made me understand why.”

“It happened to me too.” Kaito smiled. “That really is the best lesson the Council teaches.”

Kai, sweetie, the formula is Time + Materials + Skill = Cost. Minus Discount since it's for a friend.

>> Will you need any other charms to take with you.” <<

That needs a question mark.
