It was one of those things everyone heard stories about, but Vaughn had never really believed them. The fae had always kept themselves separate, not wanting to mix with the humans, while the shifters and mer people had been much more friendly, although there were humans who had issues with the other races. Really that was to be expected. Finding that creatures most people thought were fiction actually existed was difficult and those problems were exacerbated by the fae’s irrational need to pretend that the rest of the world didn’t exist. Of course there were those who said that behind the scenes things were very different, that the fae Queen was fighting with her elders to get them to accept that being on Earth meant they had to change, and until he stepped through the wards it was something he couldn’t accept was the truth.

It had first happened three days before. Kaylyn had felt this nagging sensation when she walked past the park, but she’d ignored it, because she couldn’t help thinking she knew what it was. The next day it was the same and she kept going, kept telling herself she didn’t want to go to the fae school, even if she did have magic, because going to the fae school meant dealing with the fae. After everything her parents had told her about their time at the school she was certain that she didn’t wan that. Yet, when she walked past on the third day she found herself stopping, wondering if things might have changed in the twenty years they’d been out of the school, because things could change a lot in twenty years.

Very few humans ever found an entrance to the fae school. When they did it was seen as a great achievement and they were automatically accepted for training. Some of the older fae didn't think that any human should ever be accepted into the fae school so they did all they could to make sure that all the entrances stayed hidden. It didn't always work. Occasionally the increased protection actually helped a human find an entrance. Tamara was one of those humans.
