Aurora never really meant to keep the job she’d inherited from her mother a secret from Harrison. Magic just wasn’t a subject that got brought up in regular conversation. It was safer that way. Talking about magic could be enough to get you executed, especially if you knew too much about it, because the King was paranoid. He truly believed that all magic users were dangerous, which was why he’d been able to let someone take his second son to the mountains to die as he was meant to be the son who always had magic. She knew that it was a subject she was more knowledgeable about then anyone else in the kingdom, so she had to be very careful not to say the wrong thing, even when she was with someone she trusted the way she trusted Harrison.

Aurora had always known that her father was a magic user, even though there were people who said, loudly, that telling a six-year-old the truth about what had happened was a mistake. She heard them all, because they seemed to think she was oblivious to what was happening around her, but she wasn’t. Being young didn’t make someone stupid and yet that was what everyone seemed to assume. They thought she was too young for the truth, as though she wouldn’t learn their version of the truth anyway, once they stopped criticising her mother and started gossipping about her father instead. Fortunately, by then, thanks to her mother’s belief that she was old enough to understand what was happening, she already knew what had happened.

Written for dreamwidth user meeks’ prompt about Aurora’s world’s equivalent of Samhain.
Harrison looked around the square, even though he knew that Aurora wouldn’t be there. She avoided all of the celebrations she could, which was understandable, and Sauin Day was the hardest of all. If Harrison had a choice he wouldn’t have been there either, but he didn’t because he was the Crown Prince. Sighing, he sipped his drink again and wished for the absinthe that Aurora had brought down from the mountains. It would knock him out in about ten minutes so he wouldn’t have to listen to the same speeches again. First his father would talk about how grateful he was that another year had passed safely, thanks to the work done by the Prime Minister and Head of Security; followed by the Prime Minister giving his speech on how wonderful the King was and how he was thankful that they were kept safe from magic users; and finally there would be a speech from the Head of Security, and the Army, who would reiterate what the Prime Minister said.

Written for dreamwidth user forgottenspirit’s prompt about blooming on their equivalent of Samhain.
Blooming on Sauin Day wasn’t something Aurora would wish on anyone, even her worst enemy. Along with the ability to use water magic and memory magic they could also converse with the dead. It was rare, which meant that when the dead found someone with the ability they wouldn’t leave that person alone and that could easily overwhelm the magic user. Since the day Aurora had taken on the responsibilty of looking after all the users in the country she hadn’t met anyone who had bloomed on Sauin Day. She was grateful for that, because she didn’t know how to help someone in that position. In several books a form of crystal was mentioned that could help to shield the user from the dead but it was one that hadn’t been seen in hundreds of years.

This was another difficult one because I couldn’t decide what it was to begin with and kind of wanted to go for irony, but then I chose to work with something that I think is a real gift.

This story was written for meeks.
Aurora stared into the flames, wondering how other people felt on their eighteenth birthday. It was a day that would define the rest of their lives but no one ever talked about it. She knew why. Talking about it would make the possibility of it happening more real. Being a user of magic could be a death sentence and that was enough to terrify everyone. Parents dreaded the thought of losing their child while her generation was worried that they would never fulfil their potential. They all had plans for their future, which was something she'd never been able to do. After spending several days poring over the family trees of everyone in town she knew that she was the only person who had two magic users for parents. Her fate was inevitable.

Also, because I received a £6 donation one more free story will be posted this month. I emailed my donor and asked her what she'd like to see and she chose, unsurprisingly to me, Introducing Amber, which will be going up sometime next week. I've got to edit my sponsorable stories list because I have some that are ready for sponsorship that I haven't posted, so I'll probably do that either tonight or tomorrow. Once that's done I'm going to focus on writing as much as possible while my partner is in Russia. He'll be gone for another fifteen days so I should be able to get a lot done. :) First thing on the list is the two first month's adoption stories, then
