Kara could feel Conrad’s eyes on her, obviously wondering where her calm had come from, because normally that wouldn’t have been the way she reacted to someone she perceived as a threat. He didn’t know that she didn’t perceive Lucas as a threat. Instead she saw him as someone who was trying to do what he thought was right and she appreciated that he had talked to them, rather than just going after Tristan, as that would have been the easier thing to do. Lucas stared down at the table for so long that she thought he wasn’t going to reply.
“A year is a long time,” he said.
“I know, but I truly think we need the time. We are the three strongest people in this house, so the best thing we can do is learn to work together, as we will, in the future, need to be able to. Fortunately I don’t think it will be the near future, otherwise I’d be pushing for change the same way you are, although not for the same reasons.” Kara bit her lip. “Having powers doesn’t make us better, Lucas. It makes us different and different in a way I don’t think the world can ever be ready for. When the time comes that they do know about the Millennium Children we need to be ready.”
Lucas looked up at her. “You’re not the person I expected you to be, Kara.” He glanced over at Conrad. “We all know what happened, but I don’t think we can ever understand how it changed both of you, and, as much as I wish I wasn’t, I’m glad. There’s a chance you’re right about the future and that chance is the reason I’m going to give it a year. However, I do want us to talk to Tristan soon about the decision that we’ve made, so that he can teach us what we need to know about running the house.”
For the first time Kara smiled. “Thank you. I’ll talk to Trist later. He’ll understand why we’ve come to the conclusion that we have and I think he’ll appreciate knowing that there is now a time limit on how long he has to stay leader. Like Conrad said Trist never wanted to take over, but he had no choice. Your arrival proved that to him.” She studied Lucas. “I’m sorry about that. We weren’t particularly welcoming and I think our reaction to you was the last thing you needed, but after everything we’d been through we really couldn’t cope with a new arrival.”
“You don’t have to apologise.”
“Maybe you don’t think I do, but I disagree. I remember what it was like to step into this house for the first time and it was terrifying. Having to deal with us…” She shook her head. “Admittedly we had just buried all of our friends, and I am grateful that you accept our shock as a reason for our actions, but that doesn’t mean we had any right to act the way we did.”
