It was midday and all of Alena’s shifters we safely on Earth. She turned to smile at the fae princess, their eyes meeting for a moment, making it possible for her to see all the worry within them. “Both the cats and the dogs have safely travelled to Earth, Willow. Alder looks knackered, but he’s still going, so I applaud your decision to choose him as the one in control of that side of the door.”
“Thank you, Al.” Willow smiled, but it quickly faded. “Knowing that everything has, so far, run smoothly is a weight off my shoulders. It’s just… the elders still aren’t happy with my decision and they just won’t back off. Even now, after everything we’ve done to prepare for today, they’re still trying to convince me that we’d be better off staying here, when I know we wouldn’t. This world is dying and it’s taking my people with it.” Together they watched as two fae carried another of their race through the door on a stretcher. “I know that our only option, if we’re going to survive, is to travel to Earth, and they don’t agree, because they believe that this is something that will fix itself.”
“We know that you’re right.” Alena bit her lip. “Even though I didn’t want to say anything before it was beginning to affect us and if that was happening…” She trailed off, shaking her head. “We don’t need to use much magic to shift.”
Nodding, Willow sighed. “Thank you. Would you be willing to say that in front of the elders?”
“Of course, if you think it will help.”
“Honestly I doubt it will, but it’s worth a try. It’s going to be a couple of days before I can call a meeting, because I need to start working with the humans, and, if Alder’s right, it’s not going to be long until the place of magic we’ve taken over starts to grow.” Alena nodded, although she wasn’t certain what that meant. “Magic and human technology doesn’t mix, Al, so it won’t be long before the magic starts to affect everything they own, as well as the electricity they use to power things, and they don’t know how to live in a world without electricity. Us being there is going to change everything for them and I want to do my best to prepare them for that, even though I’m not certain that the Prime Minister will even believe me when I tell him what I am.”
“You’re going to have to create a door if you want to get there quickly and I think having a girl appear in his office will give him some idea that you’re telling him the truth… well, as much of the truth as you can, because there are certain things none of us know.”
“I hope you’re right. What I need is to have him working with me as soon as possible, because Alder told me we’ll have around twenty-four hours from the time the last of the fae arrive.”
