Warning: spoilers.

Due to the worlds all being created by magic there is very little continental drift. Magic doesn’t work in the same way lava does as a core, so there is very little movement under the actual surface, which means that you’re unlikely to find the continents moving because of anything other than choice. By choice I mean that of the world’s creator. As I previously mentioned each creator who worked on actually making the worlds had a different vision for their worlds. The worlds are numbered by which was placed first, rather than the creation order, as some creators made more worlds than others, and often the creators who made fewer worlds spent more time working on the worlds they did create.

Occasionally there are magical volcanoes. These are different from lava volcanoes because they cause much less damage, although you will often find that children born around the time of any of these volcanoes may have more magic than those born at other times (the length of time varies from world to world) or they may be born with a different form of magic to anyone else on the world. Something it is important to remember when world building for this collection is that the magic does evolve over time and evolves differently for all the worlds. There are times when it evolves faster than others, so for some worlds it may take a year, for others it may take centuries, and there are a few where it can take millenia. It is possible for magical volcanoes to cause damage. Whether they do or not is entirely dependent on where the volcano actually erupts. Often the creators planned for the possibility of something like it happening, as they saw the volcanoes on their old world, but some didn’t. In these cases the magic would create its own opening, anywhere it pleased, and this will have an effect on the world around it.

Time was also something in the hands of the creators. Each world has a different calendar to the next and the walkers are the only people who have a complete list of these. The ‘demons’ who can walk between worlds without tattoos aren’t a race of people, aren’t a group who came together with the idea of watching over the worlds, and so there are ‘demons’ who have more knowledge of the calendars than others, depending on what they’re doing with their ability. (It is worth knowing that the first true world walker was a ‘demon’ who could walk the worlds without tattoos.) The walkers are happy to share their knowledge with people they have given permission to travel – normally merchants, who bring items from one world to another in order to sell them.

They fascinate me too. :) It was an idea I came up with while in the car and I thought it would work really well for this collection. I have a couple of ideas that I want to work with and really explore how the volcanoes can change things.

I have a fair bit written for the anthropomorphic setting, now that I have enough background information to feel that I can do it justice. I went with geysers instead of volcanoes, though, figuring they could be a related version.
