Written for [livejournal.com profile] skjam's prompt: New Year's: The pause between old and new.

The energy was hard to capture because it only lasted for a moment, but it was important. Most witches didn't bother to even try. Some sorceresses did, as they had spells that they could only do if they had the energy from that moment when the old year ended and the new one began. Everyone could, if they wanted to, collect the energy, as long as they were in the right place at the right time. It did, of course, mean spending time around people, which wasn't something that every witch or sorceress would do. Martina didn't mind much, she actually kind of like people, so she was the one in her coven who was usually chosen to attempt capturing the energy.

Written for [livejournal.com profile] rix_scaedu's prompt: A winter holiday celebrated in the opposite hemisphere to its place/culture of origin.

They had brought their winter holiday with them and they were determined to celebrate it on the correct date, even though it was summer. Estelle smiled as she walked through the market, seeing stalls that hadn't been there the year before, even though it reminded her of why they had all been forced to leave their home behind. She pushed it to the back of her mind. If they had the strength to push away whatever emotions they were feeling to celebrate then she wouldn't let it get to her either.

There was a minute, maybe more, probably more, when Rachel had no idea what was going on. Slowly she stretched out her arm. Instead of it ending in a paw and being covered in fur it ended in a hand with five fingers and was covered in skin. She stared at it, not wanting to touch it just in case it disappeared. That had happened before. Finally she let herself reach out with the other arm. It looked the same as the other one. The hand, her hand, felt so different to a paw. Hands had much more movement and she bent her fingers to get a feel for what it was like to have them.

Lucille stared down at the envelope. She knew what it held, which was why she couldn't bring herself to open it. Becoming a world walker was the only thing she'd ever wanted to do and she had spent nearly nine years studying each of the thirty-four worlds it was possible for a walker to visit. The exams were there to test a potential walker on their knowledge of all the worlds they wished to travel to, so most would study only the worlds they were most interested in.

Written for [livejournal.com profile] skjam's prompt on CGI monsters being more convincing than real monsters.

Halloween was Edward's favourite holiday. It gave him a chance to wander around town as himself, instead of hiding from everyone the way he had to do on a normal day. He always planned out what he was going to do carefully because he knew it would be another year before he could leave the house again. The contact lenses he bought specially for Halloween went into his eyes and he couldn't help smiling at himself. For the first time in his long life he had fiery purple eyes to go with his purple hair. Carefully, he combed his hair around his horns, wincing when he caught one of his horns accidentally, before brushing his fangs. When he felt presentable he left the house.

On the way home from college Sebastian walked past a box. It wasn't remarkable in any way so he would have probably walked straight past it. Then he heard a noise. Someone else may have heard it and thought that it was their imagination. For a moment he did think it was in his imagination, but he decided he'd have a look just in case it was something. People did leave things, vulnerable things like kittens and puppies, in boxes. When he peered into the box it was dark. He didn't want to move any of the flaps in case he disturbed something. There was something that moved in it. A small something with a tail. The tail looked like it belonged to a lion. He blinked, sure that he couldn't actually be looking at a lion. Lions were wild animals and not the sort of thing you'd leave in a box.Read more... )

They walked together, holding hands as they usually did. Lena didn't have a destination in mind. It was just nice to have time to spend with Jake. Often they were both too busy to spend any time together and that was why they hadn't really made anything official. For her it was easier because it meant she didn't feel the need to tell him. If they were together then it would be different, she would have to tell him. Keeping him in the dark was dangerous enough as it was but there was no reason anyone should know who he was, yet.

When Erin was almost out of the window a hand grabbed hold of her leg and pulled her back into the room. All she had a chance to do was let go of the files in the hope that she'd be able to retrieve them. Her feet had barely touched the ground when she was almost picked up by the owner of the hand. The only thing she really had a chance to notice about him, other than his gender, was the slave collar he wore around his neck so she knew that he was only following orders. That didn't stop her from trying to fight her way free but he was a lot stronger than she had expected him to be.
