This is something that I work more into my non-fantasy works than I do the fantasy. With the fantasy I don't think that it's always the best idea to involve my beliefs with a character that uses some kind of fantasical magic that I would never be able to use. It just doesn't feel right, because I know that magic(k) - however you want to spell it - is real. I also find it easier to write characters who are pagan because I've never been a 'proper' Christian and I know a little about other religions but I've never been anything other than pagan.

However I know that my beliefs won't be the same as other pagans. I know there are those out there who are non-religious pagans while I'm probably on the more religious side of the scale, so my characters will worship the deities that I feel is right for them. Sometimes I think the deities like what I'm doing because a certain deity will seem to ping me when they want a character. I've always used tarot cards and believe deeply that it's possible to know what may happen in the future, although I know that it's always open to changes. So I will show that through my characters.

Really this is a subject that I could write about for hours, because there is so much I want to show through the writing of my more pagan works. I hate it when people see someone who is pagan and assumes things about them because of their religion. I am not Wiccan but I think that when I say I'm a witch some will assume that means I'm Wiccan. At the same time I'm also interested in shamanism but my shamanism will never be the same as that of someone in America or Australia or other parts of Europe because I will connect with my ancestors and the world around me.

There are two things that I love about writing fantasy.

The first thing is the world building. I don't complete my world building before I start writing because I love to learn about the world as I go. Maybe that's wrong but it's the way I've always worked and I don't want to change it. Sometimes that can make things more difficult because I don't always know the answer to questions that my characters have. Then I have to go and think about why, which can sometimes take longer than I'd like it to.

The second is exploring different types of magic. I know that a lot of magics have already been explored by other writers, but I love to explore them from a writer's point of view. It's so different to reading about them. When I can I try to work with magics I haven't read about before but some are too interesting not to try out with my characters in my worlds.

In all honesty I didn't really make the decision that I was going to write almost entirely fantasy. I think I have four non-fantasy based collections and a lot of the random stories that I want to write are fantasy. It's just the way things happened. I am very influenced by what I read and I do read a lot of fantasy, but I think it's also because I find fantasy easier to write than anything else. If I get a chance I love to read historical fiction, horror, thrillers and the occasional mystery, although I don't write in those areas because I don't think I could do it justice. Especially horror and mysteries.
