Lucas walked into the room. He was an easy person to spot. One corner of the lounge always filled with girly sighs and Kara could feel his power. She didn't have to look up to know that he was flanked by Simon and Andrew. They were his best friends so they were always together. When she looked up he was heading in her direction, alone. Simon went to sit with another of their friends, Gary, while Andrew headed straight for Eric. Eric wasn't interested in Andrew but that didn't mean that Andrew was going to give up. When he set his heart on someone he usually got what he wanted. Kara kept her focus on Lucas.

“I honestly don’t think I could have,” Kara said, and Tristan saw the look in her eye she always had when she talked about that night. Seeing it always made him think that she hadn’t told him the whole truth. “If I talk to Mim’s brother maybe I can finally come to terms with what happened. It’s something I need to try, at least, even if he doesn’t understand why I had to do what I did.”

Tristan looked up at the pictures of Miriam, Conrad and the other children again. It wasn’t hard to understand why the tragedy had happened. Gaining the sort of power Miriam had as a teenager or an adult would have been hard enough, but she’d been a ten-year-old girl who was thrown out of her home by her parents because she’d turned into an animal. All of the people in the house had been children when they’d first gained their powers and it had affected all of them. When Tristan looked at Kara, Lucas, or any one of the children he was attempting to bring up he could see it. He knew he hadn’t been a good enough surrogate parent to any of them as he’d been twenty-three when the house had fallen under his control and he’d had no idea how to look after children.

Biting his lip Tristan thought of the other book that was in one of the desk drawers. It was a book he had looked at often enough but had never had the courage to open it. Within it was the information on the other people who had found about the Millennium powers, the six other men who had been with his grandfather when they’d first found out about the crystals that would call the children with those powers to a place of their choice. Some days he wanted to read about them but at the same time he was terrified. He wanted them to be better people than his grandfather so he would rather live with his image of them in his mind than find out that they weren’t.

Written for Surprise Story Week: 13 (again).

Yawning, Tristan finished the last of his observations on the new arrival. He put his pen down on the desk and looked around the study. Almost everything in the room had once been his grandfather’s because he’d found himself unable to replace anything or get rid of anything, even though he’d been the leader of the shapeshifter’s Brotherhood house for over a decade. The picture on the desk was the only picture of his grandparents that he knew existed so it felt as though his grandfather was still there. His only addition to the room was the pictures on the wall next to the door. When he looked at those pictures he was reminded of why he’d taken over in the first place and why he couldn’t just walk away, no matter how much he wanted to.
