Part 1

They didn’t look like it was as easy for them to swim underwater as it was for the Uisdro, so Cassian didn’t stop to think. He acted. With both hands he pulled the first girl out of the window, hoping that he hadn’t caused any damage, and she swam towards the surface. It seemed as though the others had realised what he was doing, as they didn’t fight when he grabbed hold of them. Each one of them seemed a little weaker than the one before, but he didn’t have time to help any of them to the surface, not if he wanted to get them all out safely. Fortunately it appeared that those who had got out before were swimming back down to help their weaker friends. When he had the last, and weakest, of the girls out, he swam to the surface with her, where the others, some with arms around them, were treading water.

Cassian looked around. There were other girls doing the same thing, so it appeared that Conall had been busy too, and Cassian decided it was time to get them all out of the water before they started to get ill. From where they were he could see what appeared to be very small people on the beach, people Aunt Aisling must have sent to help the girls. He didn’t bother to speak, as he had no idea if they spoke a language he could understand, he just gestured and then started swimming in the direction they should all go in. Until he reached the shore he didn’t know if they’d followed him or not, but he was glad to see that they had. Aunt Aisling stood with the group of people who were waiting for them, smiling, and he walked over to her once he’d left the girl he’d helped ashore with her friends.

“You didn’t warn me,” Cassian said.

“I wasn’t certain, love, otherwise I would have done. Conall is used to me now, so I can talk to him about possibilities and why I need him to be in a certain place at a certain time without him asking too many question. You have a habit of asking questions that I can’t answer.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t apologise. It’s a good thing. Without you around I wouldn’t have thought to ask Sephy some of the things you’ve come up with and because you have I know much more than I could have done otherwise.” Aunt Aisling smiled. “You are a wonderful combination of both your parents, Cassian.”

“She’s right.” Conall sounded out of breath. “You did a good job out there. Once you knew something needed to be done you did it and you saved those girls lives.”

“They would have got out themselves, I think, but I don’t know if they would have had the strength to get to the surface. Being underwater for that long was very difficult for them.”

Aunt Aisling nodded. “Sephy said it would be. It’s why I wanted to make sure I had Uisdro here to help them get out and the other races on the surface to help them once they were out of the water.”
