Maeve pushed all those thoughts aside. Aisling had told them everything they needed to know about what was coming and then let each of them make their own decisions, which was something Maeve would always be grateful for. It meant she could go home, talk to her brother and cousin, who in turn talked to other people, so everyone she hoped to tell about North Square knew about the city. She bit her lip. There were times when she worried about the number of people who did know, just in case they told the wrong person, but Aisling had told Maeve more than once that it didn’t matter if a couple of the wrong people did find out about the city. For years there had been certain safety mechanisms in place that meant no one would get into the city unless they were meant to be there.
“How long will it take us to get to North Square?” Somhairle asked, and Maeve knew he was doing his best to take her mind off things that she couldn’t do anything about.
“About three hours. We’re closer than anyone else, which is why I left it so long, but the city has been so well hidden that no one knows about it unless they need to.”
“That’s going to change soon enough.”
Feeling sad about that Maeve nodded. “Will they leave us alone?”
“It’s in their best interests to. None of them will want to start another war they can’t win, not when they’re already surrounded by enemies, and they’ll know we can’t do any harm. We might even be useful.”
“You really believe they think that far ahead?”
“No, I don’t, but I hope they will.”
Nodding again, Maeve reached out to squeeze Somhairle’s hand. “I know exactly what you mean, but I really do doubt that they will. All of the supremacists are so certain that they’re right…” She sighed. “They want to eradicate their enemies, even though they seem to have forgotten that those enemies have been allies for so long that it’s going to be hard for them to survive alone.”
“Well, it will be for the Tein-Igni. The Dorma and Uisdro both have skills that mean they will be able to eat, although it won’t be a very good diet for either of them, while the Tein-Igni always relied on trade with the other two races in order to eat something other than rabbit.”
“Some of the Tein-Igni I spoke to when I was at the training temple said that things were changing. Apparently one of the Priests found an old stock of seeds, probably from decades ago, and decided to plant them, even though he didn’t think that they would grow. When they did it was a nice surprise and he was, fortunately, sensible enough to make certain he kept some of the seeds aside, to plant the next year. Even though I had trouble believing it was possible the girl I was talking to wrote to the Priest, who happened to be her uncle, and he sent some of the seeds to her. I have them in my bag.”
