“So it turned out that ending up here for good for both of you then?” Anna looked at Lucas and Conrad, wishing she knew them well enough to be able to tell what they were thinking from the looks on their face, but she didn’t. “If you’d known this was possible would you have wanted to come here?”
“That is a question I really don’t know how to answer.” Zoe sighed. “Being here has been a wonderful experience, but I still miss all of the people I left behind and I don’t know if I would have chosen this. I know they don’t remember me, which is something I will always be grateful for, because it means it’s been easy for them. For me, though, and my memories, it’s been so much harder, as I can remember them, every day, and some days I miss them so much. Those are the days I wish I could tell Mum about the Nox Gadael, or Dad about the Stormkin, or tell my older brother about the constellations here.”
Anna nodded. “I don’t have that problem.” She bit her lip as she tried to work out how much she should tell them about what had happened to her. “The life I left behind on Earth wasn’t technically mine – a girl called Charlotte had an accident and a girl called Anna woke up afterwards. Apparently, according to my doctors, I have amnesia, but I’m beginning to think it’s more than that. I’ve been dreaming of a life I think I lived before and it wasn’t Charlotte’s.”
“You could be a walk-in.” Anna looked at Lucas, hoping that he would explain what he meant. “When Charlotte was in the accident she died and moved on, so you took over her body, which is something that happens much more often on our Earth than I think it would on yours.” He shrugged. “That doesn’t mean it never happens, though, and it would make sense, although amnesia is still a possibility. A couple of times I’ve thought about changing my name when I found myself in a body that seemed wrong for it, but I never have.”
Conrad nodded. “I’ve had the same problem. This body has never felt like it’s Conrad’s, even though I am Conrad, so maybe it’s time that we both chose another name. We can always go back to using our old names if we get back to Earth.”
“Has anyone ever returned?” Anna asked.
“A few people have and they’ve even managed to get back to Taithmarin, which is how we know about the memory thing. If it wasn’t for them we never would have known that the people we leave behind loose their memories of the person who is taken from them. Things might be different for Conrad and Lucas as they’ve come from a world with magic, but there’s no way for me to know for certain unless you do manage to return. For you it might be easier, the same way Taithmarin’s magic might be, or it could end up being much harder as it’ll be different to the magic that you knew.”
