Part 3

There were times that Adara had been disappointed she wasn’t a shooting star. She would have loved to have had some of the attention that they lavished on those girls, especially from her mother, but it never happened. Unfortunately she was just another Witch, nothing more, so they didn’t really care that much about her, not even when she got pregnant, not even when they’d taken her son from her, and she really doubted they’d noticed her disappearance until it was much too late to find her. Maybe it was luck, then, that had protected her from all of that, so she could get away from Raenarin without being detected the way some escaping Witches had been. Others had got away, the same way she had, and they had been her inspiration. If they could get away from the covens then she could as well.

Adara took the mushrooms into her cottage. She studied them for a moment, working out what she should do with them, and it was obvious to her that she should treat them carefully. A number of them would be dried, some in the oven and some in the room she’d set up for drying, even though she hadn’t planned on doing anything Witch-like at all, just in case, because she couldn’t stop thinking that they would find her. The covens always found the Witches that escaped them, apparently. Pushing that though aside she shook her head. One of each would be dissected, so she could learn more about them, and when they were she would be able to use them.

On Raenarin they wouldn’t have worried about experimenting on the mundanes. Adara had to think about murder charges if one of those mushrooms happened to be poisonous, but then the people of the closest village weren’t so well off that they could ignore the bounty that had just falled upon them. They would end up eating them. What she needed to do was keep an eye on everyone that ate the mushrooms to see what happened and hope she was lucky. However that would all happen after she warded the cottage the way she should have done when she first moved in, instead of being overly worried about everything.

Without letting herself stop to think too much Adara made her way over to the bookcase she kept her old journals. She tried not to read them too often, because they had a bad habit of making her cry, and she hadn’t wanted the ink to run. They learnt warding early on in their studied, so she flicked through the pages. It was before she’d really made any friends in her coven, as there had been a time when her mother had believed that she didn’t have any magic at all and that meant she’d been kept away from the other young Witches, even though she had. Unfortunately she was a late bloomer and that had affected her life. Her best friends had been the adopted Witches, because they didn’t judge her for being different.
