Part 1

“Is it because you have me?” Rynne looked at the magician who still hadn’t given her his true name, which might have been because she hadn’t given him hers, and smiled. “The more time I spend here the more open the magicians become and I’ve heard rumours about Christophe. Apparently there are certain people who think he might have feelings for Amber.”

He smiled back. “I don’t know for certain, because Chris and I aren’t what you would call friends, although we are allies, but I do think it’s possible he might have feelings for your thief.”

“She’s not my thief. Not now, anyway. Once you could have called her that, but with everything that’s happened I’m not even certain that she would be willing to talk to me, especially if she found out that I’ve actually been studying magic with you.”

“Eventually she’ll understand.”

“You can’t know that.”

“Rynne, I trust Chris’ judgement. If he thinks that she should be here, that she will become our ally, then I accept that he’s right.”

“Christophe doesn’t know Amber. I do, so I understand the way she things, and I don’t believe that she will ever view Christophe as anything other than an enemy.”

“Did you know that Amber once broke into Chris’ bedroom?”

“Once we actually got to know each other she opened up to me about what she did at the school that made them less than happy with the choices that she made and explained why they suggested to me that she’d be better off as back-up. I ignored them the way I always did, because I knew they didn’t like it much when trainee thieves didn’t follow the orders they were given, and travelling to the other world without permission would really have irritated them.”

“Did she happen to mention to you that she broke Chris’ wards without trying?”

Rynne stared at him. “No, she didn’t.” She brushed a hand through her hair. “That explains why Christophe thinks she’s the best person to have here, because that means…”

“Exactly. There is no doubt in my mind that she will be one of the strongest magiciains we’ve ever seen, if she chooses to learn, and even if she doesn’t she will have the dreams. Having the dreams always changes people, so they will change Amber.”

That was something Rynne couldn’t argue with. She wasn’t strong enough to have the dreams, but she could imagine that knowing what the future was going to hold would change people. Maybe she was lucky to not have them, to not know what was coming, especially as everything she’d read about them said that they were often snippets all jumbled together, so you’d have to work out how they all connected. If Amber did have them… Rynne shook her head.

“When do you think I will see Amber?”

“I doubt it will be before the Samhain Dance, but I’ll talk to Chris. I might be able to convince him that the two of you should talk sooner. The only real issue with that is Lissa.”
