Part 1

Fortunately Jackson knew he was supposed to wait for someone to come to him, otherwise it would have been tempting to start wandering. If he did that, though, he might end up being kicked out before he’d even started his lessons and that wasn’t what he wanted. Sighing, he brushed a hand through his hair, wishing he was better at waiting patiently, because he hated standing there when he could be doing something much more interesting. Apparently it shouldn’t take long. The wards chimed all around the school when someone stepped through them. Brushed his hand through his hair once more he looked around. Maybe he’d stepped through at the wrong time and everyone was too busy to introduce themselves to the new arrival. Maybe, and this was much more likely, it was a test to see what he’d do, because they already knew who he was. Staying still meant he would be accepted when someone finally arrived.

After what felt like hours Jackson saw someone walking towards him. The someone was male, looked relatively young, and the closer he got the more obvious it was that he was annoyed with something. Jackson bit his lip. He didn’t want to have to deal with someone else’s annoyance, especially as it was someone he didn’t know. “Don’t worry, Jackson,” the someone said, obviously recognising worry when he saw it. “I’m not annoyed with you. The system we have set up here, on the other hand…” He shook his head. “Nice to meet you, I’m Scott, I’ve been here for longer than I can remember, and we know who you are. We’ve been waiting for you to turn up, because you were the one who was most likely to out of all your siblings.”

“So I don’t get the talk?”

“No, you don’t.” Scott smiled. “I should give you the talk, but you already know what I’m going to tell you, so what’s the point in wasting the time that we have. As far as I’m concerned we’d be much better off doing something a little unusual, if you’re willing.”

Jackson studied Scott and could see the twinkle in his eye. “I’m willing.” Jackson smiled. “I think I like you already.”

“Good.” Scott turned and placed two stones on the ground. “When I say the right words this will create a door that leads to the other world. The others won’t be pleased with me for doing this, but I’m sure you’ve heard enough stories to be able to work with me.”

“I don’t have a wand.”

“You won’t need one, not there, not if you do what I say when I say it.”

“Okay.”

“That’s what I like to hear.”

If Jackson did hear the words that Scott said he didn’t remember them later, which was probably for the best. Once the door was there Jackson followed Scott through it, wondering if he really should, but by then it was much too late for any doubts because they were on the other world. Even though Jackson had heard stories about them none of those stories could really describe the beauty and desolation that surrounded him. He just wished he had more time to look around, as Scott started running towards the house that was in front of them, and Jackson knew he had to follow, otherwise he would be grabbed be one of the magicians before his training had started.
