Part 1

Lexi brushed a hand through her hair as she tried to get her head around what had happened. Ragnar has used a magical potion to force her to stay on another world, because he thought she was his soulmate. The first part she could understand. He’d showed her some of the magics of his world before, so she was hardly going to disbelieve him when he said he’d made a potion to use on her, but the idea of her being his soulmate… for a start she didn’t accept that she had one and if she did she doubted it would be someone who’d made a decision about her life without consulting her. As she studied him it was easy to see how happy he was to have her with him, so there was a chance, if he’d asked her, that happiness would have been enough to convince her.

“You may have truly thought this was a good idea, but it wasn’t,” she said, doing her best to keep the anger she was feeling out of her voice. “Ragnar…” She shook her head, trying to find the words to tell him what she was thinking, but every time she tried her emotions got the better of her. Lexi wasn’t certain whether she wanted to scream or cry. “This is going to take me some time to get used to and in that time I want to be somewhere that isn’t here.”

Ragnar shook his head. “We’re meant to be together.”

“Maybe we are.” She hated lying, but if she was going to get him to work with her it seemed to be the best idea. “Unfortunately, though, you dragged me here without any warning, without giving me a chance to prepare for what was coming, and my head is all over the place. If you want me to be able to live here happily I need a chance to sort myself out. With you around that’s not going to happen.”

“Why do you say that?”

From somewhere Lexi managed to summon a smile. “You’re too distracting. This world is almost entirely new to me and I want to be able to learn more about it without feeling like I have to appreciate everything about it for your sake. Surely there’s somewhere you’ve set up for other girls like me.”

The long silence made her think that she might not have been convincing enough, until he nodded. “We do. Axel said you’d probably want to go there, but I was hoping you’d want to stay with me. I can teach you everything you need to know about Kankirin and I honestly don’t expect you to like everything. There are things I don’t like.”

“I know you can.” She made herself reach out and touch his cheek. “This is just the last thing I expected to happen to me, so I’m going to be stupidly emotional sometimes, because you’ve taken me away from my life and, even though I know I can build a new one with you, nothing about this is simple. For you it is. You knew what you wanted, you knew what was going to happen in advance, and you were already happy about it all before it happened.”
