Guinevere studied Donovan. “You are right about that, but I’m lucky enough to work with a seer. We do our best to make certain that we make the best decisions we can and getting rid of him…” She shrugged. “Obviously there was some reason for him to survive, so that’s why you were there, and a reason why we were meant to end up here, although I can’t think of what it might be.”
“There isn’t a reason for everything.”
“In the Web there normally is.” She took a piece of dried apple out of the bag and started chewing on it. “Taithmarin only let me there because I needed to have a longer lifespan, although Athare won’t tell me why. She’ll only say that I’m going to be needed, which isn’t a good enough reason for what she did as far as I’m concerned, at least until I find out what it is I’m needed for.” She held the bag out. “Until the end of the hard snows we’re going to be living off preserved food, so it’s something you’re going to need to get used to. We might get lucky, we might be somewhere the snow people deliver to, although I doubt we are. I’ve never been that lucky before.”
“Who are the snow people?”
“About a hundred years after the creation of Aerith a group of children was celebrating the end of the hard snows by building snow people, and a couple of dogs, without thinking that anything would happen. It hadn’t before, so why would it be different that time? The next day those created snow people had disappeared, but returned three days later walking, talking, and asking for help. Ever since then they’ve been relied upon to make supply drops to places like this.”
“Places that are created in case people get trapped in the hard snows?”
“Yes.” Guinevere looked around. “They’re built underground as it’s warmer and this one was built purely for anyone who might walk through the door. Most of the others are bigger, with more food and blankets, because it isn’t unusual, sadly, for a family to find themselves travelling when the hard snows start. Unfortunately you can prepare for them, but they often come earlier than you expect them to. A lot of people have lost family member because they haven’t been close enough to a shelter and there are only so many of these that can be made.”
“Why’s that?”
“Very few places have the money to be able to afford to build one of these, let alone keep it stocked.” Guinevere sighed. “They’re one of the most useful things and I tried to help when I was here, but building one of these sanctuaries isn’t easy and we lost people when we made the attempt, due to snow falls. We did finished the shelter, though, so their loss wasn’t in vain, although I still think of them, especially if I’m on one of the safer worlds. I look at those people and I hate them, because they’ve had it a hundred times easier than the races here have, but I don’t doubt that they would help of Aerith was connected to the rest of the Web.”
