Part 1
Part 2

Mairin bit her lip. “I’m not sure I should talk too much about it, Piaras, at least not without Emrys’ permission.”

“Emrys won’t mind.” Piaras smiled. “Since we started this whole thing we’ve actually become friendly, which is something I really wasn’t expecting, and I’m sure the only reason we haven’t had a chance to talk about what he’s been doing is because he’s been so busy. If he has twelve doors on one world I can understand why.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m sure. Riordan introduced us when we were very early on in the process and Emrys told me that my two worlds were going to work well within the Web – he even helped me to chose a couple of the creatures we created for Siaral. Even though we haven’t been told anything I’m certain that he knows more about all this than anyone else, for reasons he isn’t ready to tell anyone other than Riordan… and maybe Bronwen.”

“What makes you think he told Riordan?”

“Riordan doesn’t make any decisions unless he’s consulted Emrys. Emrys must know more than my cousin does about the creation of the Web for something like that to happen.” Piaras studied Mairin. “Have you asked Emrys about your race?”

Nodding, Mairin smiled. “He told me they weren’t going to cause any damage, not after the argument he had with Aubrie about the Witches. They, apparently, are a terrible idea, and the whole reason he’s been doing what he has been with Gaelom.”

“That’s what had him in such a bad mood the last few days?”

“Seems to be. He really thought he could convince Aubrie that she shouldn’t have them on Raenarin, because they were going to cause a terrible amount of damage to both the world and the rest of the Web. Unfortunately not everyone believes that he has the right to be as pushy as he has been about the choices that we’ve all made, so they won’t listen to him, and Aubrie has made the decision that the Witches will be going on Raenarin, in part, I believe, to spite Emrys, which is childish and petty.”

“Maybe I can talk to her.”

“Aubrie, as far as I can tell, isn’t going to listen to anyone. Fortunately it does seem like Emrys has a very useful back-up plan, which involves Gaelom.” She studied Piaras. “You’re absolutely certain he won’t mind me telling you.”

“I don’t think he will, Mai, because I’m sure he would tell me himself if we were ever in the same room at the same time.”

“Okay.” She sighed. “Emrys is making Gaelom into more than one world – or at least that’s what he’s been trying to do and I think he might have succeeded, although I’m not certain that’s a good thing.”

“He’s really trying the onion thing.” Piaras laughed. “It was something we talked about in the early days, before we knew what were going to be doing, and I told him he should try to make a world within a world, which then turned into more than one world within a world. We called it the onion world, as it had more than one layer, but I didn’t think he’d actually try to make it.”
