Part 1

“Willow does seem like the sort of fae I could deal with, but my worry is the teachers,” she said, studying Colton.

“My parents told me they weren’t too bad, although a couple of them were less than happy about teaching mixed bloods, but they might well have moved on by now. The Queen is much more interested in getting as many mixed blood into the school as she can than she is in dealing with teachers who might be bigots and she is the one who makes the decisions when it comes to them.”

“They went to the school?”

Colton nodded. “Both of them are mixed bloods, so I didn’t think I’d have enough magic to be able to see the door. Obviously I was wrong.”

“Do they know much about their families?”

“Mum believed she was half blood, Dad about a quarter, but for me to be in this position it’s either more or one of their parents was very strong.” He shrugged. “Often the fae who came here before Kalinia started fading have more magic than those who were there during, although how much magic does very much depend on a number of factors, including how strong they were to begin with. I seem to need to learn more about my family tree, although that can be difficult. Neither of my parents have any met their fae relatives.”

“For what reason?”

“Dad believes he’s never met his grandfather because of the position it would put both of them in. He’s related to one of the elders, which often seems to be the case, and that relationship would make things harder than they need to be for Dad, because it means that he’s been acknowledged as part of the family. They send letters all the time, so they do know each other, but it does make sense that they keep it as that. Mum… it’s different for her. Her mother walked away and if it hadn’t been for her sister, who happened to have been having a conversation with Esra, she never would have known that she even had magic, unless she happened to find the school. It seems likely that she would have done, as she is relatively strong, although I think she might have walked away, rather than making the decision to enter.”

“Esra?” Their eyes met. “That’s an interesting connection.”

“Yeah, Mum said that she’d met Esra a few times, as well as Esra’s many mixed blood siblings, and it was their encouragement that led her to apply for the school, which isn’t usual for human mixed bloods. Normally we just have to find the door.”

“Would they be proud of you if they found out about your magic?”

“I don’t know. Really it’s not something that I can be proud about, because it’s down to pure luck that I have enough to be able to see the door, and now I need to decide whether I step through it or not. There’s this niggling doubt in the back of my mind that I should be doing this, as the fae will never truly accept me, but does that really matter?”
