Alena nodded. “Honestly I think the packs had as well, separately, but we had to make the final decision together, which was simpler than I thought it was going to be. Now it’s just a case of making certain that I split things correctly, otherwise I’m certain there are going to be problems, because they’re arguing much more now than they were before.” She sighed. “I know you can have problems with the cats, so I’m not going to stand here and say that you have it easy, but the packs… the longer I’m Queen the more I sympathise with Mab. She made the wrong choice, as she shouldn’t have stayed on Kalinia, but making any choice was never going to be the right one, not when she had thirteen elders to listen to, who would all have had the opinion that they should stay, no matter what the younger fae said. Going with the consensus was really her only option and yet I can’t help thinking it’s going to lead to the end of her Queenship.”

“You’re probably right about that.” Tybalt sighed. “I’ve always felt sorry for Mab, but she did choose the position. If she hadn’t wanted it she wouldn’t have spent the time going through the election process, although I always got the feeling it was her mother’s choice rather than hers, because she had been Queen until her decade was up and she never felt that a decade was long enough. By getting Mab to become Queen she basically got another decade.”

“Mab will stop listening, though, towards the end, when she starts to realise that listening to the older fae isn’t getting her anywhere. They might well know more than her, but they can’t accept what’s happening and that is why they’re still on Kalinia. I do believe they will leave eventually though, when the elders are affected by the loss of magic and she gets someone younger, although I can’t work out why they’re still alive now. Or why Willow’s elders are either.”

“The elderly fae who did die had much more magic than the elders. I don’t know why, but I’ve heard several theories, the one that makes the most sense being that those families made certain choices when it came to who they married that have meant whoever end up taking the elders’ seat will have much less magic than possibly even their sibling, because they were always going to be the elder. If they weren’t then their father would have made a different choice when it came to picking a wife.”

“I’ve always hated that about the fae. Hopefully Willow will put a stop to that sort of thing.”

“She’s going to try her best, but it’s so deeply ingrained… I think it might be best to leave it to time, because they will begin to make different decisions. Being on Earth isn’t going to be anything like being on Kalinia and they won’t have a monarch who’ll let them get away with anything they please.”
