As the last of the shifters stepped through the door Tybalt breathed a sigh of relief. He hadn’t been certain that six hours would be enough time, but it had and he turned to smile at Alena. “Your turn,” he said, reaching out to squeeze her shoulder. “Alder’s on the other side. He went through as soon as Willow opened the door to begin setting up the tents that we’ll all be living in to begin with, until they have a chat with the Prime Minister and let him know what’s happening, when we’ll hopefully be able to start working something more permanent out.”
“Maybe they should have done that first.”
“If they’d had more time they would have done, but Willow did say that her family’s choices have made things more difficult. By letting themselves believe that everything would be fine, no matter what happened, they’ve left us with less time that we needed to be able to get to somewhere safe before Kalinia dies.” Tybalt sighed. “Thankfully Willow isn’t the sort of person to let other people make decisions for her. She’d seen every one of her siblings die and knew that meant we have no choice but to find somewhere else to live as quickly as possible.”
“Poor Willow. I wouldn’t wish what happened to her on my worst enemy.”
Tybalt nodded. “Neither would I. We were lucky, in comparison, because the magic fading didn’t affect us, although I’m sure it would have started to soon.”
“Yes, I was beginning to feel it. Changing into my other form was harder than it had been before and when I was in it I didn’t want to turn back, but I did, because I’m their Queen and they need me.”
“They’re lucky to have you.”
Glancing over her shoulder at the waiting shifters she shook her head. “It’s nice to hear you say that, Ty, because…” Alena bit her lip. “Keeping them all working together as a cohesive group is getting harder. Honestly I don’t think I’m going to be their Queen for much longer, but for now they need me, as I’m the one who’s been working with Willow.”
“I wish I could say it was a surprise, Al, but this had been coming for a long time.”
“I know.” She sighed. “That’s what makes it harder, really, because I’ve been fighting the whole time, knowing what’s coming, and I’m certain there are some here who don’t want to believe me, but as the fae are leaving…”
“That makes it real.”
“Exactly. Some have chosen to stay, because the Thirteen Families are, but the rest have seen what Willow’s been through, even what Mab’s been through, and made the decision that they will be better off on Earth. I think they’d have made the decision no matter what, after everything that’s happened.”
“We’d already made the decision. If it wasn’t for Alder we would be gone by now, but he told us that it wouldn’t be long before the fae left Kalinia and we’d be better off going with them.”
