Willow had opened the door at midnight on the day when the boundaries between their world and Earth were at their weakest, because it meant that creating it used less magic than it would have done on any other day, and fortunately the Princess wasn’t stupid. Theo was the first to step through it, as one of the twin Kings of the cat shifters, while Tybalt had stayed behind, making sure that everything ran smoothly on Kalinia. As they only had six hours to get everyone through, before the dogs took over, it was important that it all went as planned – and with cats getting anything to go as planned could be difficult, but Theo knew the realisation was beginning to set in. Kalinia was fading fast. With Willow’s fae gone they’d have a little extra time. With Willow gone they had no other chance of getting to safety, unless they did what the griffins did and went hunting for a door, and it seemed unlikely they’d find one because they didn’t have the ability to feel magic.
They could have gone with the griffins. Liesel had come to them when she realised how bad things were getting, but they’d waited, because Alder had already visited them and they trusted him. He’d said that it wouldn’t be long before Willow took over and when that happened… well, she wasn’t the sort of person to wait for someone else to make decisions for her. She knew that Kalinia was dying. It had taken enough of her family along with it and once she had control things had moved faster than Theo had thought was possible. First she’d called a meeting of the fae and shifters, having already talked to the Mer-King, to tell them about her plan to move to Earth. Draven had visited them later, having talked to Willow after the meeting about what would be best for the Dragons, because he knew that it would be too much for the people of Earth to deal with the fae, the shifters, the merpeople and the Dragons, so they were going, with the more predatory of the shifters, to another world.
As always Theo and Tybalt had asked their people what they wanted to do, even though they thought they knew what the answer was going to be. It took the cats an hour to decide that Earth was their best option and when that was done the packing began. Each cat was permitted to take one bag with them, no more, because no one had any idea what would happen once they found themselves on their new world, although Willow had said that things would be sorted for them, and all they could do was hope that she was telling the truth. She was a good person, so Theo didn’t think for a moment that she was lying to them. On the new world he found himself face to face with a smiling Alder.
“You’re going to have a very long day,” Theo commented, smiling back.
