Although… Jasper bit his lip, trying to work out how he’d react if he was in the same position as Kestrel had found herself in. She was female, for a start, which put her at a disadvantage, especially as she was a small, relatively light, female. She was a green mage, which meant she had limited magical abilities to use in order to free herself, but one of her skills was the ability to be able to contact someone over long distances. It was something he’d heard her use before to great effect and he wasn’t sure if Falcon knew how magically strong she actually was. The one thing Jasper had always found very strange was how he couldn’t hear Falcon’s thoughts in the same way he could hear Kestrel’s. Yet another mystery he’d probably never solve. However, if he was Kestrel and he found himself locked in a room with no magic, the first thing he would do was try to get outside the null shield, in order to get in contact with Falcon, so that was something he was going to have to listen out for. Letting her fall to her death as she tried to climb out of the window was not something Jasper wanted to happen.

Sighing, he shook his head. Ash was busy cursing his stubbornness as he made his way up another flight of stairs, as the Grey Gardens was five stories high, and then there were another three underground. It was a big place, because it was home to hundreds of mages at one point, but things had changed a lot since Ildieu was first created. Even though people had tried before no one with past sight could see that far back. It might have been a part of the magic that was used to create the city, which wouldn’t surprise Jasper, so it was impossible to see what happened during the war that they really should have been able to learn about in order to make certain that it never happened again. Unfortunately it appeared that the mages hadn’t thought that far ahead. All they wanted was to protect the rest of the world from the war and try to rid themselves of their own abilities.

Jasper couldn’t imagine what it must have been like for them and he couldn’t understand why they’d made the choices they had. The war must have been terrifying, but that didn’t mean every one who had survived had chosen to enter Ildieu. Others had stayed outside the city, hiding themselves until the time came when they knew they were free to do what they wanted, and yet, from what Ash had said, it seemed as though the loss of all he mages had affected the magic outside the city. At the time those mages stepped through the gates of Ildieu they’d forgotten who they were and that meant they were no longer mages, at least for a short time, until they realised that there was a lot that they didn’t know about themselves and started trying to work out exactly what it was. Curiosity was the one things the mages seemed to have forgotten when they made the choice to enter the city.
