“How do you know that?”

Finn gestured in the direction of the calendar. “It’s something we’re going to have to keep an eye on in the future, so I think I’m going to be taking that with us, and I do actually have an idea for a place we can start a community, although there is a chance someone might already be there.”

“Where?” Kelly asked, sounding unsure, their eyes meeting for a moment, and Finn told himself not to tell her how uncertain he was about the idea.

“The secondary school up the road.” Finn smiled. “I was thinking about what I’d do if this was the apocalypse, even though I kept telling myself not to, and I really did think it would be a good place for us to start our community, although it is going to need some work if we’re going to start farming.”

Kelly stared at him. “How are we going to keep it safe?”

“I don’t think that’s going to be too much of a problem, because the children who have found themselves free of all restrictions aren’t going to want to return to a place most of them hated and those who didn’t will be doing their best to pretend that they did, so they can fit in with everyone else. That, sadly, is going to be a problem within the gangs – children doing things they never would have done if they had another choice and I want them to know they have one.”

“You might be right about that, actually.” Kelly smiled, looking as though she hadn’t expected herself to, and nodded. “We are going to need to work out the logistics of it all, though, because it’s going to be hard to heat all that space without central heating, and we’re going to need to dig up some of the concrete if we want to have any garden space at all, which is going to be almost impossible without any electrical tools.” She shrugged. “Hopefully we’ll be able to start building up our community quickly enough to be able to make a start on all that.”

Smiling again, Finn breathed a mental sigh of relief, because he didn’t know what he would have done if Kelly hadn’t of thought his idea was good enough to go along with. “Actually I thought about that. In front of the library there’s some paving that we could take up to begin with, before we move onto the rest of the playground, and that should be enough space for us to have a little garden to begin with, until we do start gathering more people.”

“Okay, Finn, have you thought about heating?”

“Blankets and sleeping bags.” Finn shook his head. “We have a little time before we need to start worrying too much about heating the place, so, hopefully, that will give me enough time to work something out, and if it doesn’t… well, maybe we’ll get lucky enough to have someone who knows more about central heating systems that I do who can rig it to work a different way.”
