“No, we didn’t, but that doesn’t mean we have should sit on our arses and let what’s left of the world fall apart because we’re too scared to attempt to do the right thing.” Finn shrugged. “The best choice we can make, even though it isn’t going to a simply thing, is to try to rebuild what we can. We won’t have electricity, or running waters, or gas hobs, so we’re going to have to start from the beginning.”
Kelly bit her lip. “Why did I pay the fine?”
“So you could look after us when we were all ill.” Finn reached out and squeezed her hand. “I know things didn’t work out the way we hoped they would. We all knew that having the injection was a bad idea, but we couldn’t all afford the fine, and you were the chosen one.” He remembered feeling so jealous that she was the one to have been given the money they’d raised, until he realised that if they were right and the injection did affect them all adversely then he would have to look after everyone else, which was something Kelly was definitely going to be much better at. “None of us knew that it was going to be the end of the world. We all thought that we’d spend a couple of weeks being ill before everything went back to normal, even though we were writing worst case scenario reports, telling our readers there was a chance that the injection would kill almost everyone who had it.” He sighed. “We were preparing them for something we doubted was going to happen, because there was a possibility, no matter how slight, that the lack of testing would mean the injection would cause deaths.”
“Although not this many.”
Finn shook his head. “No, we didn’t believe things could ever get this bad, and maybe we should have done. If we’d have prepared in advance for the end of the world we could have been ready for this day to come, but I don’t think we really wanted to think that the World Government would really be so stupid as to put out an injection that would lead to the deaths of the majority of the human race.” He smiled. “One of the newspapers ran a story saying that the World Government were actually planning for the end of the world and wanted something like this to happen when they gave everyone the injection, so it won’t be long until they come around gathering up all the children who have no parents.”
“I really hope that they were just scare mongering.” Kelly glanced at the still flickering lights. “Okay, well, if we are going to find somewhere we can turn into some sort of community we’re going to have to move soon or not leave at all tonight, because we don’t have a lot of daylight left and I’m sure it won’t be long until the power cuts off.”
“There’s going to be a full moon tonight, so it shouldn’t be too bad walking at night, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Any children who were thinking about creating gangs have had a three day head start.”
