Kara kept her focus on Lucas, even though she wanted to glare at her best friend, because he had changed since the day it happened and sometimes she really didn’t like him. She didn’t blame him, though. It was impossible for her to imagine what it must have been like to have had a girl they thought of as a friend in his mind, making him use his abilities to kill other friends, until he stepped into her room. When their eyes had met she could see Mim in them, it was impossible not to, and Kara could tell that Conrad was doing his best to take back control of his own body.
“He stops us from fulfilling our true potential.” Lucas shrugged. “Yes, he may give the new arrivals an older mentor who can help them to use their abilities, but we aren’t encouraged to experiment, except under strict controls, and I think that’s wrong.”
“That’s because you haven’t lived with a leader who believed that we should experiment, believed that we were capable of taking over the world from the lesser being, and haven’t dealt with the aftermath of it all.” Kara could tell it was taking all of Conrad’s willpower not to yell at Lucas and she reached out, taking hold of his hand, to give him the strength he needed to keep speaking, because he’d suffered much more than she had. “I admit that Tristan may not be the best leader we could have had, but he took us on at a difficult time and he kept the house open, even though he wanted to close it. He knew that we need somewhere to learn how to control our abilities, to live with what we are, to understand why we were thrown out of our own homes due to our shift into an animal form, and he did everything he could to make sure that we had that. Lucas, his grandfather had just been killed – he could easily have walked away and I wouldn’t have blamed him if he did.”
“You’re too emotionally connected to him,” Lucas said, shaking his head. “Conrad, you need to see the bigger picture. This is more than just us. There are other houses out there, other people like us who might not have been called by a crystal, and we need to start working together, because we are special. We deserve more.”
“No, Lucas, we don’t,” Kara replied, her voice much quieter than she expected it to be, and when their eyes met she could tell that he saw the pity within hers, but he couldn’t understand it. “We were born with abilities that no children had before, that you believe makes us special, but there are going to be people out there, possibly even our parents, who see us as cursed. They will try to kill us when they find out that we exist and we aren’t ready for that, not yet. Tristan is doing what he can to keep us safe, which you may not appreciate, but it is the right thing to do at this point in time.” Letting go of Conrad’s hand she stood, stepping around the table so she was next to Lucas, which seemed to surprise them all. “In the future there will be a time when one of us should take over from Tristan and when that time comes we won’t fight it, but…” She put her hand out and gripped Lucas’ shoulder. “It isn’t now. Give it another year and then we can talk about which one of us should be sitting in Tristan’s chair. He’ll even help us to make the decision. Until them, Lucas, we need him.”
