Luna wasn’t sure she wanted to be special. Being on another world was going to be hard enough to get used to, without being someone that everyone looked at a little differently because she was brought to Taithmarin by a book. She smiled at Arien, though, did her best to seem calm and collected about the whole thing, as she had always known what the book did. Of course it had been her choice not to open it, knowing what it did, while it had been the book’s choice to move, so that she didn’t know where it was. Being on Taithmarin wasn’t something she wanted, but for some reason she was obviously meant to be there.
“Okay,” Luna said, keeping her voice as level as she could, “what happens next?”
“Well, I’ll take you to the flat that you’ll be living in for at least the first two years of your time here, I’ll teach you what you need to know about Taithmarin, and then after that it’s up to you, really. I can’t make you accept Taithmarin as your new home. You might chose to cling to the life that you left behind or you might be able to embrace the differences of this world the way I have.” Arien smiled. “Being here isn’t going to be easy, you are going to miss the people you left behind, but Taithmarin is a nice place, if you can get used to the strange races that are wandering around.”
“That isn’t going to be the hard part.” Luna bit her lip, trying to distract herself from thoughts of her family, but at least they wouldn’t be missing her. “How am I going to pay for the flat?”
“Every new arrival gets an allowance, that you’ll get for at least six months, but it can be extended if you need. Some people do, because the other thing it can be difficult to get used to is the calendar, as it’s nothing like the one you left behind, and we have real seasons here… at least I’m assuming your from the same country as I am.” Arien blushed slightly. “I really should learn not to do that, even though I’ve never met anyone who isn’t from the UK.”
“I am from the UK.” The one thing Luna really wouldn’t miss was the rain, because there was too much of it, and if there were real seasons maybe she’d be lucky enough to see real snow. “Why do you think the door chooses people from the UK?”
Arien shrugged. “Lots of people have theories, but no one knows for certain. It’s not as though we can ask the door or Taithmarin why they’ve picked the races they have and why the humans they chose always come from the UK, even though it would be really helpful if we could. Then maybe we could ask them how to replicate the magic and send back the people who really don’t want to be here, because it’s not fair for them to be stuck here, but there’s nothing we can do apart from let them have a separate part of town where they don’t have to deal with the strange races that make them feel so uncomfortable.”
