Part 1
Part 2

“I’m not going to judge you, Mab,” Persephone said. “You may not have made the right decisions, but that doesn’t mean you weren’t trying to do the right thing.”

“We all make mistakes,” Hecate continued, sounding as though she knew what she was talking about. “The choices you’re making now are what really matters and we want to help you with them.”

“I can’t stop the elders.” Mab sighed. “They’ve made their minds up. All I want to do is make them think more about the effects their choices are going to have on the fae and the races they’re going to create, because I honestly don’t think they’ve thought much further ahead than tomorrow.” She ran a hand through her hair. “Saving our race from extinction is more important than the people they’re going to create.”

“Neither of us thought you’d be able to.” Hecate smiled at Mab and Persephone was once again grateful for Hecate’s help. “What we want to do is help guide the races that you create.”

Persephone nodded. “Even if some of the fae do realise that the races they create are going to need more than being given shelter and food it’s not going to be enough. My plan is to gather together some deities who’ll help with the spiritual problems your races are going to have, because working together now is more important than it ever was.”

For a long moment there was silence. Persephone watched Mab, who turned to stare out of one of the windows at the world she’d found herself on, and Persephone felt something trying to get her attention. She couldn’t work out what it was to begin with, but then she realised it was Athare. The fae had found themselves on a sentient world. Biting gently on her lip she let Athare connect with her.

‘You’re right. The races are going to need something more than the fae are capable of giving them.’ Athare’s voice was full of sadness. ‘I’ve seen how things might go in the future and on all the worlds there are people who will need you to guide them.’

‘How do you know that?’

‘My future selves have told me, Persephone. They warned me that the fae were coming, so I wasn’t dozing when they arrived, and each of them have told me what they’ve seen happen.’

‘Did they tell you we were coming?’

‘They did. On all the Athares you and Hecate came down to offer your assistance, but Mab didn’t accept it on every world. She may accept it here or she may not. We’re not certain what it is that makes her choose one way or another.’

‘You want us to help the races?’

‘I do.’ Athare sighed. ‘Even when Mab didn’t accept your help I always did, because I know what’s going to come in the future in a way that she can’t. She’ll need you in the future, too, as she has no idea what’s going to happen to her now that she’s on a world that has no afterlife.’
