Jean-Luc didn’t stop to think. He just moved, making his way around the reception desk so he could wrap his arms around Alice. “Nick made the final decision, Ally. Maybe you feel guilty because you asked him to help, but he could have said no and he chose not to. He would have wanted to help that poor addict as much as you did.” Gently, Jean-Luc squeezed Alice. “The fact his creator is the vampire who started the auctions, and wanted us both to help him with it, makes us both feel guilty. Helping addicts and doing our best to combat the auctions is the only thing we can do to assuage that guilt.”
“That’s what Nick wanted to do with the house.” Alice rested her head on Jean-Luc’s chest and he remembered how nice it was to have someone to cuddle. “It’s his way of truly trying to put an end to the auctions, although we know that it’s going to take years.”
“You’re going to need more than one donor house.”
“Lewis is working on getting a couple more open in England, because he believes in the donor houses as much as Nick does.” Alice gently squeezed Jean-Luc’s hands. “If you’re going to be staying her, Luc, we need to get things sorted out. You need a rule book and someone to show you around the house. I’d do it, but I’m on reception duty tonight, and I know someone who’ll be just as pleased to see you as I was.”
“Rule book?”
“Opening the donor house meant getting things right, because we need to look after our donors, and getting things right meant we needed to create rules for both vampires and donors. Basically as long as you don’t feed from anyone wearing white you’re going to be making a good start.” Alice sighed. “Everything is still very much a work in progress right now. We’re making things up as we go along, even though Nick and I did something like this in a smaller form when we first met, so if you read any rules and think of something that will work better please let me know.”
Nodding, Jean-Luc released Alice. “I will.” He smiled at her. “No one else would have the courage to do something like this, Ally, and I’m proud of what you’ve already achieved.”
Biting her lip Alice turned to the filing cabinet, which told Jean-Luc that he’d embarrassed her. “Nick and I would never have got this far if it wasn’t for Lewis and Issac.”
“I think I met Issac before, because he’s been friends with Nick for a long time.” Jean-Luc thought for a moment. “If I remember correctly Issac was the vampire who took Nick in when he left his creator behind and taught him how to be a vampire. They didn’t stay together for very long, because Nick wasn’t comfortable spending time around any vampires, but Issac checked up on Nick a few times.”
