“It’s Jennica.” Jennica smiled. “Come on, Clay. We have a lot to talk about.”
Clay let her lead him through the house, wanting answers to the questions he had more than he wanted to eat anything, but tried to remain patient. She hadn’t had to help him, anymore than she had to help anyone, so he was going to do things her way, no matter how long it all took. It was obvious she knew more than he did about having magical powers and he wanted to learn from her. He needed to learn from her, he needed to understand why he had bloomed, why he’d survived, and if there was a reason she’d been able to save him. Eventually, after what seemed like hours, they reached what appeared to be a conservatory. On a small table was what looked like Jennica’s breakfast.
“I’m not hungry,” Clay said, his stomach turning at the sight of the food. He hadn’t felt hungry since the day he’d found out what he was, although he had forced himself to eat so he could keep walking. “I’m sorry, Jennica.”
“At least have a cup of tea. I have a wonderful mix that should help to settle both your stomach and your mind.”
“Only answers will really settle my mind.” Clay sighed. “I never wanted to be a magic user.”
“That’s normal, Clay. Blooming, even though it’s natural, means that you have illegal powers, and that means the very possibility of becoming a magic user is now terrifying.” Jennica shrugged. “I can’t tell you why you bloomed, why you survived, or if you having magic will mean that your siblings will also bloom some day. No one really knows the reason anyone has magic, although I can give you theories.” She shook her head. “We all have plenty of theories.”
“I’d like to hear the theories. I need more information that I have, Jennica.”
Jennica nodded. “I know.” She ran a hand through her hair. “The first person known to have bloomed is Sauin. He was a prince and as the second son he would never have ruled, but he was said to have been thinking about following his uncle into religion. Sauin’s kingdom doesn’t exist any longer, because it was taken over and split and taken over again, so now parts of it are in four different kingdoms, so we don’t know what exactly the religion was, although we know they worshipped a goddess. After Sauin bloomed others did the same, all at age eighteen, and they began learning what they could do with their abilities and what they couldn’t. Soon they realised that the powers they could use were, at least in some way, connected with their date of birth.”
“How connected with my birth date are my powers?”
“Every power you have, and the way you can use them, is connected with the very moment you were born. Someone born on the same day as you won’t be able to use their powers in the same way that you can.”
