“So,” Rynne said, sounding thoughtful, “does that mean that there were female black mages in Ildieu twice during the history of the town?”
“That’s my guess, but the missing books make it impossible to know for sure. It makes me think that the female mages had an ability that the male mages are scared of for some reason, although I can’t work out what might scare someone with death magic, especially as I keep thinking it must be an opposite.” Heliopath shrugged. “I don’t know why we were locked away either, because the missing books also included that information.”
“The opposite of death magic must be life magic.” Dylan shook his head. “Surely life magic must be a good thing.”
“I suppose it depends on how it’s used.” Rynne bit her lip. “If you have some form of life magic that means you can bring the dead to life, then I can understand why some people would see it as a bad thing. Plus we can’t know that anyone even knew what form of magic female black mages had. We don’t know why we were shut away and it could have been due to the death magic, which could have led to the rise of the female mages, followed by the same loss of information that we’re dealing with now.”
Heliopath smiled at Rynne. She was one of the smartest people he knew and he was so grateful she’d left everything behind to return to Ildieu with him, even though she knew there might end up being a war they couldn’t win if the mages didn’t start working together instead of trying to kill each other. If she hadn’t become someone he really relied on he would never have asked her, leaving her where she was safe instead, because the last thing he wanted was for something to happen to her. He didn’t want something to happen to Dylan either. Dylan may not have been as smart as Rynne, but he was good at magic and that was something Heliopath needed as much as Rynne’s brains.
“All we really know if that the mages were closed away because of a war and now it’s entirely possible there might be another war, because the mages outside of Ildieu think that we’re weak. To them the town has become something of a myth. When the mages who left told their children stories of the town they left behind, the town they never wanted to leave behind and promised themselves that some day they’d return to take it over, it was a very different place. Now…” Heliopath shook his head. “If I can convince Falcon we should work together we might have a chance of beating the mages if they decide to fight for Ildieu, but if we don’t I have a feeling our only option will be to surrender, no matter what that means.”
Dylan raised an eyebrow. “I wish we could do something more, Ash, but Falcon is much more likely to listen to you than he is to outsiders.”
