Part 1

‘I’ve seen worse, but not by much. How long were you running?’

‘I don’t know for certain.’ Freya looked back over her shoulder, half expecting the hunters to follow her, even though Jarl had told her that she’d travelled to another world. ‘It felt like hours, but I don’t think it was more than fifteen minutes.’ She sighed. ‘Long enough to really damage my feet, apparently. They do hurt, now that I know what I’ve done to them, so I think a healer would be a good idea.’

‘First we’ll get you into your new home. They should have had long enough to find you somewhere and I’ll get them to send someone to you. Even though it’s new year there’ll still be at least a couple of healers working.’ Jarl gently touched her shoulder with his wing. ‘I don’t know if they’ll be of our race or Nox Gadael, but I promise you you have nothing to fear from the Gadael. On their home world they were hunted too.’

Freya nodded, saving her questions until Jarl had contacted whoever he needed to contact, and tried to tell herself that whoever was hunting her wasn’t going to step through the door that had been behind her. It was gone. She’d been transported to another world by magic, so she would never have to deal with anything like that again, if she believed what Jarl had told her. Believing him made her feel happier than disbelieving him. The corridor she’d found herself in was like nothing she’d seen before and that made it seem even more likely that he was telling her the truth. Breathing a deep sigh, full of relief, she let herself relax for the first time in her life, although a part of her was still wary. She knew it would be a long time before that part of her ever relaxed.

‘Freya,’ Jarl said softly, and she was grateful for the way he was obviously trying not to make her jump, ‘you’ve been given a flat on this floor, just a little way along this corridor. Do you think you can walk that far?’

Unsure, Freya looked at where Jarl was pointing with his wing. She could see the door and finally she nodded. ‘I think I can make it that far.’ Glancing down at her still bleeding paws, she continued, ‘I’m just not sure that I should, because I’m going to leave bloody paw prints all the way to the door.’

‘Someone will clean them up.’

‘What about inside the flat? Is there something I can stand on that will mean that I don’t leave blood everywhere.’

Jarl smiled. ‘We’ve had others here bleeding, so we’re prepared for a little bit of blood in the flat. The hallway floor is made of wood and easily cleaned, which is something I can do once the healer’s sorted your paws out, and then we can talk about Taithmarin.’

‘Am I really one a different world, Jarl?’

‘Yes, you are, Freya.’

That needs a question mark.
