Part 1

“How much do we know?” Somhairle asked, as he wrapped his arms around Maeve and she found herself, unsurprisingly, sinking into the hug.

“Less than I’d like.” Maeve spoke quietly so only he could hear her. “Aisling warned me that something would happen to the Residence and when it did it was time for me to head to North Square. I just didn’t realise how hard it would be to hear the news, because I don’t know what’s happened to her. Or Trey.”

“This is Aisling we’ll talking about. She’ll be fine. What we need to worry about now is getting to North Square before someone comes after us, although we’re likely to have more protection that she would have done.”

“We aren’t safe just because our Uncle was once the High Priest of Herne.” Maeve bit her lip. “I may have been imagining things, but I’ve felt eyes on me more often than I’m comfortable with and I think someone has worked out something isn’t normal. Harry, I’m scared.”

Gently Somhairle pushed her back a little so he could look into her eyes before nodding. “Give it a couple more minutes and then we’ll leave. Everyone who’s planning on meeting us knows where we’re going, knows you’re going to be in the most danger, so they’ll follow us. We don’t have to be here.”

“Of course you don’t, Maeve,” another male voice said, and Maeve looked over Somhairle’s shoulder at their cousin. “Head for North Square if you really feel like someone’s been watching you, because it’s possible that they have. We all knew, from the moment that you were called, that you’d be in danger, so go. Keep yourself safe.”

Nodding, Maeve pulled her bag further up her shoulder. “Are you coming, Elisedd?”

“I’ll wait here for the others. We’ll catch you up.”

“Thank you.”

“We’re all in this together, cousin. Always have been, always will be.”

Maeve nodded once again, before letting Somhairle lead her in the direction of the market town they went to weekly at the very least. That was where they had horses ready for them and it was a step in the right direction. By the time they were half way to town she felt a sense of relief, because it felt like she going to be safe soon. She was lucky to be one of the Priestesses who was closest to North Square, which was why she’d decided not to leave until she heard the news about the Residence, unlike the others who’d been travelling since the Winter Solstice of the year before. According to the letters she received from Aisling at least half the known true Priests and Priestesses had arrived, but there were some she was beginning to worry about.

Like Elenor, a girl they’d both been at the Training Temple with. Elenor was a Uisdro and she’d insisted on heading home after their graduation ceremony, even though Aisling had told her that bad things were going to happen in the future. It wasn’t because Elenor hadn’t believed what Aisling had told them, but due to the people she wanted to talk to about North Square. No one had heard anything from her for months.
