The new netbook has arrived. It’s a different make to my other one, which obviously means it’s also a different model, so I now have an MSi Wind U135DX. Due to money limitations it’s a refurbished model which means there was already some minor damage to the outside, but it’s pretty good. Now that I have a machine I can work on, that isn’t James’ laptop, the next thing I want to attempt to do is refurb my old netbook, because I love my old netbook. I just needed a machine I could work on in the time it takes to do that, because if it takes anywhere near as long as it’s taken to get my tower fixed (it still isn’t and I started work in September 2011) I’m going to need something better than the laptop.
I’ve already started setting it up to my specifications, so I have Firefox but no plugins, and I still need to download Thunderbird, but I’ll do that once I’ve sorted my emails. That isn’t going to be a fun job, but then that will teach me for putting it off. A couple of new things have been downloaded, including keyboard key changer software, because the caps lock button was driving me nuts, the shift key is tiny so I kept hitting the wrong one, and the buttons I use most of all – PgUp, PgDn, Home and End – were function buttons. I’m also having problems with the o button and the e button, but I think that’s because I was used to my old keyboard which had got used to me in the last three years.
The trackpad is another problem but that’s why USB mice exist. I’m also not all that happy with the position of two of the USB ports or the power port, because I’m used to them being on the left but on this one they’re on the right. I’ve always used the mouse in my left hand, so, due to something I already have in the single left hand USB port, I have the mouse in the right hand side with the wire pretty much on my lap. Again it’s something I can work with, but is a little annoying.
The plan is for this to be the back-up machine, if I can refurb my old netbook, but I’m just going to have to wait and see. If I can’t, well this one is good enough, and hopefully my tower will be fixed at some point soon, so I can used that when I want to be sitting at the desk and the netbook when I want to be elsewhere.
