Part 1

There were times, especially when things went as badly wrong as they had done, that Amber wished she’d made different choices. Her father had died because of what he was and she’d always known it was possible the same thing could happen to her. At the same time she’d never truly believed anything would happen to her, because it had always seemed impossible. True battles between the magicians and the thieves were rare. Instead it was more of a game between the two sides, until the magicians decided that it was time to do some real damage to the thieves, which was exactly what they planned on doing right at that moment.

Apart from Christophe that was. He just wanted to own a thief. Amber gathered her last power and pushed it into the wand, doing her best not to show how much pain she was in. They probably knew, but that didn’t mean she wanted to show weakness, especially as she knew that Christophe might win. Slowly, breathing deeply, she turned to face him, trying not to let his look of smug satisfaction annoy her enough to do something stupid. Unfortunately he knew how unlikely it was for her to get away from him, for her to save Ruby and the other thieves, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to try.

Amber’s lack of power meant she needed to be smart. The magicians, if they were doing what she thought they probably were, would soon lose their powers. It did make sense for them to close down the portal, but what they couldn’t know was that there was only magic in their house if they kept it connected via the portal. Waiting for that to happen seemed the best thing to do, until she glanced over at Ruby. Ruby shook her head, looking both annoyed and disconcerted, which meant the registers weren’t in the desk. Rynne wouldn’t have known what was going to happen to her, so it wasn’t possible that she’d destroyed them, unless…

Smiling, Amber looked at Christophe. Magicians wanted thieves. There was a reason he’d made his move right then and she was almost certain she knew what it was. Christophe raised an eyebrow, looking as though he wanted to know what she was thinking. Rynne was still alive, even though everyone had been told that she was dead by the only person who had survived the attack, which meant she either believed Rynne was dead or she was lying. Unless Amber managed to get out of the house she wouldn’t know one way or the other, because the thief in question had chosen to leave their house and start again somewhere new.

When a window broke behind her she wasn’t surprised. The girls were going to try to escape the house while they could, because Christophe’s attention was focused on her and the other magicians seemed to be being a little more careful with their magic than they had been. Probably because she was there and if Christophe didn’t get her because one of the other magicians had accidentally killed her… Amber would have given money to watch that conversation if it hadn’t meant she’d be dead. Even under the most trying circumstances she quite like being alive.
