“Really? Quinn asked, disbelief filling his voice.
Bree nodded, before realising that Quinn probably couldn’t see her that well in the dark, and then said, “Really. Father may have made his decision, but he didn’t give me a chance to make one myself. I want to get to know you and make my own decision about if I want you to be a part of my life.”
“Thank you, Bree.”
“Don’t, Quinn. You’re my brother…” Bree looked at the shadow that was Quinn, unable to get used to the idea of him being her half-brother, because she’d only ever had sisters before. “I’ve never had a brother.”
“I’ve never had a sister Mother decided that she didn’t really want any more children after me. I don’t think she ever got over your father and I was the only bit of him she still had left, so she lavished all the love for him she had on me.”
“You do have two other half-sisters, but I wouldn’t suggest you sneak up on them in the dark.” Bree sighed. “To be honest they might not be as open to your existence as I am and if you ever want to get to know them…”
“I’m going to have to wait.”
“How did you know that I was the sister you should approach?”
There was a long silence. “If I tell you that you’re going to have to promise that you’ll keep it a secret.” Quinn laughed. “Of course, considering the fact you’re going to have to keep this meeting a secret it shouldn’t be hard to keep anything I’m going to tell you a secret too.”
Bree smiled. “I promise to keep both this meeting and whatever it is you’re about to tell me a secret.”
“I appreciate it.” Quinn still didn’t sound sure, so Bree waited until he was ready to talk to her. “Father… well, he isn’t exactly happy that I exist and if he gets the slightest hint that I might be in Dorma lands I dread to think what might happen.”
The shiver that went down Bree’s spine was one that told her once again that Quinn was telling the truth about their father and it made her dislike him even more. “He won’t hear anything about you from me. Father and I don’t often talk at all, because he doesn’t approve of the decisions I’ve made.”
“You mean being a translator?”
“He thinks I should be working in the fields like a good Dorma girl when all I want is to spend time translating the books people bring me into a language they can understand.”
“I’m a priest. Mother always wanted me to do something more with my life, because she thinks I’m wasting my time with a deity that doesn’t really exist, when I know that my deity exists. We talk almost every night about my options.”
“What did your deity say about me?”
“She told me that if I really wanted to meet you she wouldn’t try to talk me out of it and I think it’s because she knew that our meeting would be a success.”
