Written for a random number prompt.

Cole sat in the dining room, waiting for someone he knew to walk in. It was his second night in the donor house and he barely knew anyone, so he sat alone, tapping his fingers on the table, hoping he wouldn’t be sat there for very long. There seemed to be so many people everywhere, a mix of vampires and donors, but he didn’t feel comfortable enough to introduce himself to someone. He didn’t know who he might end up talking to, which, considering how many vampires were in the house, was terrifying. Logically he knew they weren’t just going to jump him. Unfortunately logic wasn’t enough when he’d been taught that vampires were evil.

When Morgan stepped into the room Cole breathed a sigh of relief and then he saw who she was with. It wasn’t a surprise she’d spend time with vampires, because she had been in the house for years, but he’d hoped the one donor he’d felt a connection with would be free to talk to him for a bit. He looked down at the table, biting hard on his lip, before looking at Morgan again, and when she noticed him she smiled over at him. Smiling back was easy, until he looked at the two vampires again. His smile faded.

Nodding, Morgan made her way over to the table alone. “Vampires are a fact of life here,” she said, as she sat down in the chair opposite him. “Right now they’re going to be the enemy. That’s normal. What you have to do is work past that.”

“It’s not that easy.” Cole ran a hand through his hair. “I still want to run in the opposite direction when a vampire looks at me.”

“I never said it was easy. Getting used to vampires is probably the hardest thing you’re ever going to have to do, but when you do it’s worth it.” Morgan looked over her shoulder at the two vampires. “Every vampire is different and the one similarity they all have is that they’re here because they don’t want to feed from unwilling humans.”

“I’ve heard that before. Nick told me during the interviews, Alice told me when she checked on me yesterday, and that doesn’t change the way I feel about the creatures that surround me.”

“Until you make a connection with one of the vampires it won’t. It’s easy to hear what they’re saying, but it’s not easy to understand that the vampires here have chosen a specific way of life because they don’t view humans as lesser beings. So many vampires see us as prey, as playthings, as something less than them, that it’s hard to believe that any of them see us as something more.” Looking over her shoulder once more Morgan beckoned over the two vampires she was with. “We can’t be gentle with you if you’re going to be a good donor.” A shiver went down Cole’s spine as they made their way over to the table. “Meet Lorna and Amber.”

“We can’t be gentle with you if you’re going to be a good donor.”

Point of tone rather than grammar: I suggest "can't be too gentle" or "can't coddle you too much" because they are, in fact, being at least somewhat gentle with people. They have to. Otherwise nobody would stay.

No typos found.
