Written for a random number prompt.
Anna stepped through the door leading to Charlotte’s room and walked into the back of someone. For a moment she just stood there, trying to work out what had happened, before turning to leave wherever it was she’d found herself. Unfortunately where there had once been a door there was a wall, so she had no option but to deal with another change. Sighing, she turned again, this time looking into the face that belonged to the back she had walked into.
“We tried that too,” he said, shrugging. “I’m Conrad and this is Lucas.”
“It’s nice to meet you?” Anna tried to summon a smile, but was certain it looked more like a grimace. “I’m Anna. Do you have any idea where we are?”
Lucas looked at Conrad and then at Anna. “We think, although we’re not certain, that somehow we’ve found ourselves on another world.”
“Great.” Anna glanced between the two men she had found herself with, trying to work out exactly how she felt about being on another world. “Where did you come from?”
“Earth,” Conrad replied. “We’re both from the same place.”
“I’m from Earth too.”
“Pre or post Brotherhood take-over?” Lucas asked.
“I’ve never heard of the Brotherhood.” Anna bit her lip. “That could mean I’m pre-Brotherhood take-over or I’m from another Earth.”
“At the moment I don’t think anything will surprise me.” Conrad sighed. “We need to get back home, because we’ve left Kara alone to deal with everything and that’s something I promised myself I’d never do to her again.”
“Unfortunately I don’t think we have much of a choice.” Anna glanced over her shoulder at where the door had been. “There’s no door, so going back seems impossible.”
“Nothing’s impossible,” Lucas said, “but the thing we’ve learnt about magic is that there are advantages and disadvantages to everything.”
Conrad nodded in agreement. “If there is a magical door it could have brought us here but have no way to take us back, so we’d have to find some other way.”
“What if there is no other way?” Anna asked.
“There will be one, even if we have to make it ourselves.” Conrad sounded so sure of himself, but Anna couldn’t stop herself from thinking that he was wrong. “I have to get back to Kara.”
“Kara can look after herself.” Lucas smiled. “After three lifetimes she’s much more thoughtful about the way she reacts to things.”
“True, but…” Conrad sighed. “The only reason she kept coming back was because we both loved her and if we’re not there then who’s going to convince her to live another life.”
“Maybe it’s time we passed on the duty of being leaders of Unity to someone else. Someone who hasn’t lived four lifetimes and should really have gone onto their next life.”
Every word they said had Anna wondering exactly what Earth it was they had come from, because on the one she’d come from no one lived more than one life. She lent against the wall, looking at them closely, but she couldn’t see any sign of them being older than about twenty. Thankfully they were too focused on each other to pay attention to her, at least until Lucas appeared to remember she was there and turned to her with a smile.
