Written for aldersprig’s prompt: out of the clear blue sky.

Spoilers to the Thear storyline.

Cassian looked up, an unusual glimmer of light catching his eye. Normally his fishing expeditions were quiet, a chance for him to relax among his mother’s family, but the sight he saw told him that it was going to be an unusual day. He shook his head, unable to believe what he was seeing. It was Conall’s sigh that told him that his eyes weren’t playing tricks on him and that Aunt Aisling had prepared at least some people for the possibility of whatever that was falling from the sky. As Conall stripped down to his shorts Cassian looked up at it one last time before doing the same.

“What is it?” Cassian asked.

Opening his mouth, as if to answer, Conall looked at Cassian, and then closed it again. “You don’t want to know,” he said finally, smiling. “All you need to know if there are people in it that will need our help.”

After a moment of disbelief, how could anyone be in something that was falling from the sky, Cassian followed Conall into the sea. If Aunt Aisling knew about it then he couldn’t doubt what he’d just been told. That didn’t stop him from thinking that the world he knew had just changed entirely and he wasn’t sure that was a good thing. In the sea it was easy to stop thinking, so that was exactly what he did, as they made their way together towards where it appeared the thing was going to end up.

When they got there they floated for a few minutes, waiting. Cassian had questions he wanted to ask, but he knew the best person to ask was Aunt Aisling, so he kept them to himself. It took longer than he expected for it to finally enter the water with a huge splash, displacing the water in a way he hadn’t been expecting, causing a wave that would have dragged him away if it hadn’t been for Conall grabbing hold of him, the two of them staying locked together until the wave moved far enough away not to be their problem any longer.

“Thank you,” Cassian said, feeling a little embarrassed.

“I should have warned you about it.” Conall sighed. “There’s just so much I need to remember right now that it’s too easy to forget things.”

“Share them with me.”

“When we dive there are going to be frightened girls attempting to get out of that thing. As much as I hate to say it we’re not going to be able to save all of them, so we need to follow Aisling’s instructions and get as many windows broken as possible. The door is going to be pretty useless.”

Nodding, Cassian looked at the thing floating before returning his attention to Conall. “Are we looking for anyone in particular?”

“There should be a group of girls attempting to get out together. We need to get them out safely.” Conall took a deep breath. “Let’s go, Cassian.”

After breathing in a huge lungful of air Cassian followed Conall under the water. Conall started moving around the thing one way, so Cassian went the opposite direction, smashing every window he came across, keeping a look out for the group of girls. He hoped that Conall would find them, because Conall was used to being the hero, but instead Cassian came across them as they attempted to get out of a window they’d already smashed.
