This didn’t go where I planned for it to go, at all, and I’m going to, tentatively, say that this is the beginning of another Alternate Universe for the Brotherhood. It was going to be about the very beginning of the Brotherhood and how someone found out about the Millennium Children, but instead it fits in much later in the timeline.

It all began with a book. Finding it may have meant that Dexter was exceedingly lucky, considering what he found out, or immensely unlucky, depending on the point of view of many who came later. At the time he couldn’t decide, because he knew that he wouldn’t be alive in the year 2000, so the job of gathering the Children would be passed onto someone else, but he would do the bulk of the work. Of course the future was a mystery to him then, he wouldn’t know that his son would be a member of the Brotherhood, that the Brotherhood would fracture due to arguments about the Children, and that one day the whole world would be a different place thanks to the book.

No one would even have known of Dexter’s existence if it wasn’t for the Millennium Children and their ability to view the past. They wrote down his story, knowing that their history was important, slowly beginning to understand how different the son and father were. If it wasn’t for the son the Brotherhood would never have existed, the Children would have all been under Toby’s control, but he didn’t want that. He didn’t want to be in control of any of the Children and would have happily given his crystal to someone else, if the Brotherhood hadn’t fallen apart. Unfortunately, that was probably what made it so easy for him to walk away.

Toby’s Children were left alone, both an advantage and a disadvantage for them. Others were under the control of Brotherhood members who wanted to use them as a weapon to take over the Earth, which affected those Children in more ways than anyone could possibly understand, while there were the few who were lucky enough to be helped by allies of him. All were taught, one way or another, how to use their abilities, unlike the Children who were alone or those who had powers that weren’t called by the crystals, and as there were many powers there were more Children who weren’t called than were. Some gathered into groups, knowing they were different. Many more were roamers, looking for someone to help them but with no idea where to go.

Maybe it was good that the Brotherhood did eventually take over the world, that Dexter’s plan was, in the end, a success, but once it had happened there was no going back. Everyone knew the Millennium Children existed, the majority of people were terrified, and that was the problem with the world knowing about them. Occasionally he thought seriously about seeing if he could wipe the mind of everyone in the world, because he hated the way his world had changed. The only problem he might have, apart from someone being missed, was what knowing how it would affect him. It might kill him and he couldn’t help thinking that might be a good thing.

The plan Dexter had created had come to pass, even though there had been times when he wished it hadn’t, and all he dreamed of was taking everything back. He didn’t want to find the book, he didn’t want to become one of the Millennium Children, but the one thing he wanted more than anything was to not remember what he’d done. Sighing, he put his final plan into action.

>>was what knowing how it would affect him.<<

This does not make sense. Was it supposed to say "not knowing" instead?
