This came from nowhere while I was writing earlier, so I thought I’d post it.

There was no warning. One moment Jena was simply standing in a club with Josie and the next she had a pair of lips pressed against hers. As he pulled away, grinning, her only reaction was to blink at him as Josie disappeared into the shadows. It was thanks to that grin that she knew he was a vampire, which was probably why Josie had done a vanishing act, but it didn’t help. She could have done with someone as back-up, because she knew, even though she wasn’t sure how, the vampire wasn’t going to accept no for an answer.

“Do you believe in love at first sight?” he asked, still grinning.

“No,” Jena replied, making her voice flat and emotionless, even though she was terrified.

Jena’s answer didn’t stop him grinning, which was more than a little irritating. “I do. When I saw you I knew I was in love and…” He tilted his head to one side. “…as I’m the vampire I think my opinion matters more than yours does.” The grin grew. “I was taught to take the things I fell in love with, because they may not last for very long.”

Somehow Jena managed to stop herself from shuddering, but she didn’t know how she did it. She wanted to run from the room, away from him, and only kept herself still because she knew that he’d follow her. It would probably make the whole thing more fun for him, because he was obviously a total psycho.

“I’m certain you’ll get bored with me after a couple of days, which means that what you’re feeling right now is lust and not love.” Jena ran a hand through her hair as she tried to keep herself from babbling. “You won’t get anything from the short time we spend together, apart from blood, and I’ll end up being a target for other vampires, which won’t be fun.”

The vampire looked at her, his grin turning into a look of bemusement. “I wasn’t planning on feeding from you, gorgeous.” He reached out to touch her hair but she moved back so he couldn’t touch her. “You’re going to be my new companion.”

Raising her eyebrows, all she could do was stare at him, wondering if he’d been dropped on the head as a child or if he was just weird because he’d been made into a vampire. “No, I’m not.”

“Do you really think you have a choice?”

If Jena gave him the answer she knew he wanted, because it was, unfortunately, the right answer, she felt she would have given up the fight. “Everyone has a choice.”

From the thoughtful look he gave her Jena had a horrible feeling that she might actually be making him more interested in her than he had been before. “Your choice is whether you make the change easy or hard,” he said, almost smiling at her, which was much nicer than the way he’d been grinning at her before. “I am going to make you mine.”

Can I shoot him? Hit him in the balls with a cricket bat? Light his coat on fire? Because that would be fun.
