“Very few vampires were ever given a choice,” Lewis replied, sadly. “I did what I thought was best at the time, because I couldn’t ask you what you wanted, and I’m sorry that you sometimes wish I hadn’t made that choice.” He sighed. “My creator changed me because he was lonely.”
Dawn bit her lip. Lewis had never talked to her about when he’d become a vampire, probably because she’d never spent long enough around him for them to have any form of conversation. She didn’t know how to reply, or if he even wanted her to, and it made her feel uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry,” she said finally. “I’ve never been angry with you. Ever. It’s just…” She thought for a moment. “If I had been given a choice I think I would have said yes, and I would still have regretted becoming a vampire occasionally, but I never wanted to be changed by my own grandfather.”
“I never expected to have to change a family member. When I came across you I did honestly think about walking away, because it would be easier, but I couldn’t. Leaving anyone to die would have been impossible and knowing that I would have been leaving my granddaughter…” There was silence, as though Lewis was thinking about what to say next. “Not long before I found you I was thinking about leaving the area. Being around my family, no matter how much I still loved you all, was painful, and I needed some time to deal with everything that had happened, if I had of left I never would have been able to help you. I’ve never been able to decide whether staying was a good thing or not.”
“It was a good thing.” Dawn almost smiled. “I’m grateful for the help you gave me then and the help you’ve given me throughout my life. Maybe becoming a vampire wasn’t something I would have chosen, but most of the time I’m grateful that you cared enough about me to put up with me for eternity.”
“We haven’t spent much of the time you’ve been a vampire together.”
“I know.” Dawn sighed, knowing that her problems had stopped her from having some sort of stability in her life. “That’s going to change, Lewis, because I want to get to know you properly, rather than having occasional phone chats when I need something from you.”
“Although you will need something from me when you get here.” Dawn could hear the smile in Lewis’ voice. “I’ll have a place ready for you by the time you get here and I promise you won’t have to enter the donor house until you’re ready.”
“I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready,” Dawn replied, honestly, knowing that being around a large group of vampires was never going to be easy.
“Just take your time. I’ll introduce you to a couple of vampires I think might be able to help you and then, if you never are ready, at least you’ll have some friends.”
