A world where magic is illegal, in all of the kingdoms (that I know of), and those who are born with it only find out when they bloom at the age of eighteen. What abilities they have depend entirely on the day that they were born. Unfortunately, as it is illegal, a lot of the books on magic were destroyed and it's only now, in Aurora's time, that they're beginning to learn once more exactly what powers someone will have. There is some information in the mountains, which is where the majority of magic users flee to when they realise what they are or when the threat of execution is looming over them, for whatever reason. Some times it because they have been found to be magic users and others it's simply because they are suspected of that.

In depth: Heliopath's World

Heliopath's world is an interesting place, but one that has a magic that is difficult to describe, even for the mages who use it. They've used magic for millennia on this world and there was a time when the only mages were believed to live in the city of Ildieu, where they banished themselves to at the end of a war that almost destroyed everything. For a long time people didn't think that the mages had survived the war, until it became possible for them to leave Ildieu and learn more about themselves, as the magic of the gate they created wiped their memories of everything that had come before, so all they knew was the history of the city, which, sadly, was incomplete as there were times when much of it is missing.
